Johann Georg Oettl , from 1828 Ritter von Oettl (born January 26, 1794 in Gengham ; † February 2, 1866 in Eichstätt ), was bishop of the Eichstätt diocese from 1846 to 1866.

Promotion in Munich-Freising

Georg von Oettl grew up in a simple but wealthy family in a rural area. He was the son of Georg Oettl and Salome, nee Huber. He attended grammar school and studied philosophy at the University of Salzburg and then theology in Landshut . After his ordination in 1817 he was coadjutor in Markt Schwaben . In 1820 he became the religion teacher of the children of Ludwig I , especially the Crown Prince, and enjoyed the trust of the family. He was friends with the Regensburg Bishop Johann Michael Sailer . He represented the aged Archbishop of Munich Lothar Anselm von Gebsattel , who asked the king as auxiliary bishop in vain. As dean of Munich-Freising, he took care of a. a. for the rebuilding of Frauenchiemsee or the founding of Altomünster . In the dispute over the " mixed marriages " he contributed to the creation of legislation that satisfied church and state. He was not an ultramontanist , but always sought agreement with the Pope.

Bishop of Eichstätt

When Karl August von Reisach was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising , he succeeded him on October 3, 1846 as the 73rd Bishop of Eichstatt. He wrote numerous pastoral letters and made visitations to the diocese with perseverance. He also founded brotherhoods, virtue alliances, virgins' and journeyman's associations. He was a participant in the Würzburg Bishops' Conference of 1848 . In 1860, Georg von Oettl acquired Hirschberg Castle , which was needed as an educational facility, an important property in the history of the diocese.

End of life and honors

In the course of his life he has received numerous honors. The award of the Knight's Cross of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , he was in the staff Adel collected . Oettl was Commander of the Order of Merit of St. Michael , Grand Cross of the Royal Civil Order of Constantine and the Royal Greek Order of Savior and Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher .

He had a chapel built near his birthplace in Gengham , the Öttlhof . The heavily weathered tombstone of Oettl's parents was placed in the anteroom of the chapel after the grave was abandoned.

Georg von Oettl lost his sight in 1857 at the age of 63. He died of a stroke in 1866 after serious illness and was buried in the central aisle of Eichstätter Cathedral . Franz Leopold von Leonrod was consecrated as his successor on March 19, 1867 .
