Sybill (e) a Baroness von Leonrod , née Meilhaus (born August 20, 1814 in Hanau , † April 29, 1881 in Augsburg ), was the educator of the future Bavarian King Ludwig II.

Life

Maria Katharina Theresia Sybilla Meilhaus was the daughter of the Hanau wine merchant Martin Gustav Meilhaus and his wife Magdalena Thekla, née Walz. From 1846 she was the tutor of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria until he was 9 years old. Several biographers of the king take the view that Meilhaus "pampered" her pupil. Ludwig affectionately called his teacher "Millau". After her, Count Theodor de La Roseé took over the educational responsibility for the Crown Prince. When the governess had given up responsibility for upbringing the Crown Prince, she briefly looked after Ludwig's three years younger brother Otto von Bayern . In 1854 she resigned from court service.

Throughout his life, King Ludwig remained closely connected to his tutor, "who had initiated him and his brother Otto into the secrets of reading, writing and arithmetic."

On August 16, 1860, the 45-year-old married the baron and later general of the cavalry August von Leonrod (1819–1904), brother of the later Eichstätter Bishop Franz Leopold von Leonrod (1827–1905) and the Bavarian Minister of Justice Leopold von Leonrod (1829–1904). 1905). Due to the husband's military service, the couple lived in different places, e.g. B. in Munich, Ansbach, Nuremberg, Dillingen an der Donau, Freising and most recently in Augsburg.

After the Baroness's death, King Ludwig II donated a neo-Gothic tomb made of Carrara marble to the Catholic Herman Cemetery in Augsburg. The still existing tombstone bears the inscription:

King Ludwig II.
the faithful nurse of his childhood
Baroness Sybilla v. Leonrod born Meilhaus
born August 20, 1814
died April 29, 1881

The king's grandfather Ludwig I had a similar grave monument erected for his own tutor Louise Weyland in Mannheim .
