Walter Hömberg

Walter Hömberg (born August 11, 1944 in Meschede ) is a German communication scientist . From 1988 until his retirement in 2010 he headed the journalism I chair at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . Since then he has been teaching as a visiting professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

academic career

After graduating from high school, Walter Hömberg studied humanities and social sciences in Kiel , Berlin , Tübingen and Salzburg . He passed his state examination in German and political science at the University of Tübingen in 1970 . He received his doctorate in 1973 in Salzburg in the subjects of journalism and communication theory .

Afterwards he was a member of the study group “Science and Journalism” at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University. He also carried out teaching and research activities at the universities of Salzburg, Munich , Zurich and also at the University of Philosophy in Munich.

Hömberg accepted his first professorship for communication studies in 1986 at the University of Bamberg . Two years later he moved to the Catholic University of Eichstätt and has held the Chair of Journalism I ever since . In 1997 he was appointed dean of the Literature and Language Sciences Faculty elected and has held this position until 1999. His main research interests are journalism research, communication theory, cultural and scientific communication , media and communication history, and Marginalistik .

From 1992 to 1995 Hömberg was chairman of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies . He taught as a visiting professor at the University of Friborg and for two decades also at the University of Vienna. In basic empirical studies he has with the situation of science journalism and the profession of lecturer involved in book publishing.

Journalistic activities

During his studies, Walter Hömberg worked as a freelancer for the press and radio. From 1990 to 1996 he was editor of the information service "Aviso". In 1996 he became spokesman for the “Munich Working Group for Public Broadcasting” (MAR) - a role that he held for 16 years. From 2003 to 2010 he was co-editor of the magazine “ Communicatio Socialis ”, which he was also temporarily editor-in-chief .

Walter Hömberg was a member of the jury for several journalism awards. He has published various book series and the almanac “Marginalistics”.
