Roland Burkart

Roland Burkart (born February 12, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian communication scientist . He has been a professor at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the University of Vienna since 1997 .

Studies and academic career

After graduating from high school in Vienna, Burkart studied journalism and communication science , psychology and philosophy there . 1975/1976 he was a study assistant at the Vienna Institute for Media and Communication Studies; In 1976 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the subject of “Attitude change and homeostasis. A review of the congruence model "for Dr. phil. After that he was a university assistant and university lecturer. From 1981 to 1986 Burkart was a member of the faculty board of the basic and integrative science faculty of the University of Vienna as a representative of the junior staff. In 1984 he received his habilitation; thereby he received the venia legendi for the subject journalism and communication science and the title of university lecturer. In 1986 he became an assistant professor and in 1997 an associate professor . Before that, he had held professorial positions and visiting professorships since 1976 at the universities of Eichstätt, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, Bern, Jyväskylä and Sofia, among others.

Private

Roland Burkart is married and has two children. Photography is one of his hobbies.

Honors

  • 2003: Dr. hc Awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Sofia.
  • 2010: On his 60th birthday, Burkart was honored with a commemorative publication on the subject of “Understanding-oriented Public”. (Walter Hömberg, Daniela Hahn, Timon B. (Lecture at the 2012 annual conference of the “PR and Organizational Communication” specialist group of the German Society for Media and Communication Studies from November 1st to 3rd, 2012 in Munich.)
  • 2013: Received the UNIVIE Teaching Award 2013 for excellent teaching.

Focus of work

Burkart is primarily concerned with communication theory, reception and effects, public relations / public relations (communication-oriented public relations) and political communication; the focus here is on election campaign discourses.
