The non-profit Hertie Foundation is a German foundation that builds on the life's work of the founder Georg Karg , owner of Hertie Waren- und Kaufhaus GmbH, who died in 1972 . The chairman of the board is Frank-Jürgen Weise , former chairman of the board of the Federal Employment Agency and former head of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees .

Foundation assets

The market value of the investment volume is around 1 billion euros (as of December 31, 2018). With an annual funding volume of between 20 and 25 million euros, the Hertie Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in Germany. Since 1998 there is no longer any company bond.

advancement

The work of the Hertie Foundation focuses on two main themes: researching the brain and strengthening democracy. The foundation's projects set exemplary impulses within these topics. The focus is always on people and the concrete improvement of their living conditions.

Derived from this, the non-profit foundation provides funding in the following areas:

  • Brain research : the study of the brain and its diseases corresponds to the founder's will and is more relevant than ever. 27 percent of all EU citizens are affected by brain diseases, and Alzheimer's in particular will be a major social challenge in the future.
  • Strengthening democracy : Democracy is the basis for peace, freedom and security and the cornerstone of our society. But developments in Germany, Europe and the world make it clear how quickly conditions can change.

In 2006, the foundation was awarded the Carlo Schmid Foundation Prize for its work together with the Robert Bosch Foundation .
