He is a practicing Evangelical Lutheran Christian .

job

From 1988 to 1990 Schmitz was the personal advisor to the Second Mayor and Senator for Culture of Hamburg, Ingo von Münch . This was followed by a position as administrative director of the Hildesheim city theater until 1992 and as administrative director of the Volksbühne Berlin until 1997 . From 1997 Schmitz was managing director and since December 2000 at the same time acting director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin .

Public offices

Head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery (2001-2006)

From June 2001 to November 2006 Schmitz was State Secretary and Head of the Senate Chancellery of the State of Berlin .

Berlin State Secretary for Culture (2006-2014)

From November 2006 to February 2014 he was Berlin State Secretary for Culture and managed this area largely independently under the political responsibility of the Governing Mayor . He was therefore directly responsible for a culture budget of around 371 million euros, one of the largest in Europe. Indirectly, it decisively determined the further cultural donations from the federal government and the EU as well as the other federal states, among others within the framework of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation .

During his time as State Secretary, numerous directors of Berlin cultural institutions who are still active today were appointed. In 2006 he appointed Ulrich Khoun to the Berliner Ensemble, 2007 Berndt Schmidt to the Friedrichstadt-Palast , 2010 Jürgen Flimm to the State Opera and Thomas Köhler to the Berlinische Galerie , 2012 Dietmar Schwarz to the Deutsche Oper , Shermin Langhoff to the Maxim Gorki Theater and Annemie Vanackere to the Berlin Hebbel am Ufer . Schmitz was also one of the initiators of the internationally acclaimed “Diversity Destroyed” theme year in 2013. In 2014 he was elected “Cultural Manager of the Year”.

Even before his official job as Berlin State Secretary for Culture due to tax evasion, Schmitz came under public criticism because of the lack of a contract extension and the dispute with the artistic director of the Berlin State Ballet Vladimir Malakhov . Tip magazine voted him several times among the most embarrassing Berliners of the year.

tax evasion

In February 2014 it became known that Schmitz had evaded taxes totaling around 22,000 euros for several years. During tax investigations in 2012, an account for 425,000 euros was discovered at the Swiss bank Credit Suisse , the profits of which were not taxed. At the end of 2012, the proceedings were discontinued on payment of a fine of 5000 euros. Schmitz's superior Wowereit is said to have known about it since the beginning of the investigation. On February 18, 2014, Schmitz was put into temporary retirement as a political official .
