The Friedrichstadt-Palast (also Palast Berlin for short ) is a building erected in 1984 as a revue theater with modern stage technology in the Berlin district of Mitte in the district of the same name . It was placed under monument protection in August 2020 . The term Friedrichstadt-Palast describes both the building and the revue theater as a facility with its ensemble. It is one of Europe's leading houses that perform this art form, whose representative feature is, among other things, its traditional girl series . Under the heading A Century Palace , the theater will celebrate 100 years of stage history in 2019, which began in 1919 with the opening of Max Reinhardt's Great Playhouse .

The name has its origins in a nearby house that served as a circus and theater building for a little more than a hundred years, which - shaped by an eventful history and use with varying degrees of success - became the Friedrichstadt-Palast from 1947 . The revue theater was written in one word between the 1990s and 2011: Friedrichstadtpalast . The current building on Friedrichstrasse is also called the Neuer Friedrichstadt-Palast , in contrast to its predecessor .

First building and naming

The building with the address at that time Markthallenstraße , from 1891 Am Zirkus 1 , was located (about 200 meters southwest of today's Friedrichstadt-Palast) on an area delimited by the four streets Schiffbauerdamm , Albrechtstraße, Karlstraße (since 1947 Reinhardtstraße ) and Friedrichstraße, which in North-South direction was divided by the Markthallenstrasse. Right next to it, the New Theater ( theater on Schiffbauerdamm since the 1950s ) was built in 1892 . The part of the name Friedrichstadt does not go back to the Friedrichstadt district south of Behrenstrasse , but derives from the historic quarter between Friedrichstrasse and Humboldthafen , the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt , in which the original building was located. In 2011, a new office and residential building was built on the site of the old Friedrichstadt-Palast.

Market hall and arsenal

The history of the Friedrichstadt-Palast goes back to the first market hall in Berlin, which opened on April 18, 1868, but which had to close again after seven months due to inefficiency due to poor traffic conditions. The hall was a construction made of cast iron and glass based on a design by Friedrich Hitzig, built to the latest technical standards at the time . The building was then empty and later served as a food depot. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871, the Prussian Army Command set up a supply arsenal in the building . After the war ended, the hall remained unused.

circus

In 1873 the house was first converted into a permanent circus building with around 5000 seats. On December 25, 1873, it was opened as a market hall circus under director Albert Salamonski . The ideas offered mainly horse dressage , because Salamonski was even par force riders . On April 20, 1879, Ernst Renz bought the house and continued his circus business there. In 1888, Renz had the house rebuilt again. The information from various sources fluctuates about the subsequent audience capacity, it should have been up to 8,000 seats. For his water numbers, Renz also made use of the fact that the building was erected on 863 piles over the marshy course of a Pankearms flowing through the Oranienburg suburb . This course of the river, already used to keep fish, flowers and vegetables fresh at the time of the market hall, was now openly led through the building. After Renz's death in 1892, his son Franz Renz continued the company, but had to close it on July 31, 1897 due to the great pressure of competition.

The house came through auction to Bolossy Kiralfy and Hermann Haller. After renewed renovation, they set up the entertainment business New Olympia Giant Theater and Giant Olympia Theater . The stage portal was widened to 44 meters and four of the eight large pillars in the auditorium were removed. After only two years, the duo Kiralfy / Haller had to give up again - their pompous shows with too little salary did not please the audience.

Albert Schumann was the next user of the house, who reopened a circus on October 28, 1899. Schumann relied on classic circus programs with numerous horse training as the main component. Another renovation in 1901 led to the enlargement of the stage area to 800 square meters and the modernization of the installed technology. From the 1910s onwards, the Berlin public was more interested in modern carnivore training , and visitors' interest in Schumann's performances declined . The First World War finally brought him to ruin. At the beginning of the war his horses were requisitioned for service in the Imperial Cavalry , during the war the profits were for the taxes to be paid on. On March 31, 1918, the Schumann Circus gave its last performance. The circus directors Salamonski, Renz, the artists Kiralfy / Haller and Schumann were now followed by the director Max Reinhardt .

Revue and comedy theater

Max Reinhardt wanted the circus for production use his monumental plays and classics. On April 1, 1918, the National Theater AG took over  the house on his behalf. Reinhardt had the house rebuilt again for the new use and was able to win over the renowned architect Hans Poelzig . After he had redesigned the market hall architecture of the cast-iron supports and struts with a stucco ceiling with droplet-shaped pegs, the Berliners only spoke of their “ stalactite cave ”. The main stage was now 30 meters wide and 22 meters deep. It had a revolving stage 18 meters in diameter and had movable front stages. There was also modern lighting and effect technology. On November 29, 1919, the building, now known as the Großes Schauspielhaus , was ceremoniously opened with The Oresty of Aeschylus , edited and translated by Karl Gustav Vollmoeller under the direction of Max Reinhardt. From 1924 Erik Charell staged his Charellrevue here with texts by Robert Gilbert and the music show Im Weisse Rößl . On July 12, 1925, Erwin Piscator brought his political review Despite it all on the stage. The Great Theater closed in April 1933 .

Operetta theater

During the Nazi era , the monumental building was renamed the People's Theater in early 1934 . The cones hanging from the dome were chopped off, they were considered degenerate art . A “leader's box” was built into the hall. Late bourgeois operettas were now being performed. During this time, the house was sometimes called the Palace of the 5000 and was under the direction of Rudolf Zindler .

Variety and revue theater

During the Second World War , in March 1945, the building was severely damaged by repeated air raids , which could only be repaired between the end of the war and August 1945. Now Marion Spadoni continued to run the house as the Palast Varieté, Palast der 3000, Haus der 3000 or Palast at Friedrichstrasse station .

Event hall and revue theater

Marion Spadoni was expropriated on September 1, 1947 , although the Soviet commandantura had initially issued a license for the operation in 1945. In the same year, the magistrate of Greater Berlin took over the facility, which was now named Friedrichstadt-Palast . The founding ceremony of the FDJ took place in this building on November 2, 1947 . It was also used for other major social events. The first director after the expropriation was Nicola Lupo . He was followed in August 1954 by Gottfried Herrmann , and in November 1961 by Wolfgang E. Struck .

From 1972 onwards, alongside other television productions, the first and many other episodes of the GDR television's Saturday evening show Ein Kessel Buntes were made , in which local and numerous international prominent artists appeared.

Little melody

The jazz club Kleine Melodie was located in the old Friedrichstadt-Palast in the 1960s and 1970s . This was probably originally the house's small stage . Numerous jazz ensembles showed their skills there, which later performed in the House of Young Talents on Klosterstraße and in the jazz club on Fredersdorfer Straße (Fredersdorfer Club) and contributed to the emergence of GDR pop culture .

closure

On February 29, 1980, immediately after the inspection by construction experts, the building was closed due to severe subsidence of the rotten foundation pillars in the ground. In an ADN report from the same day it said: “From March 1st, no more performances can take place in the Friedrichstadt-Palast. In the interests of public safety, the Berlin magistrate has made a corresponding decision. The constant monitoring of the palace by the state building supervision as well as special investigations have shown that the foundation construction is constantly deteriorating [...] “So on the evening of that day the last performance in the old Friedrichstadt-Palast took place with the Revue Seekiste . Although the house was closed as a venue, the ensemble continued to use it as a rehearsal stage. The magazine, the workshops and the administration rooms were still used. After the ensemble had moved to the new building, demolition of the almost 120-year-old building began in 1985.

architecture

The new building to replace the old Friedrichstadt-Palast , which was closed in 1980 and demolished in 1985, is located in the historic Spandauer Vorstadt district . The building is located on Friedrichstraße , which has been known as the amusement mile since around 1900, and bears house number 107, about 400 meters north of Friedrichstraße train station . The site of the new building was an area on which the barracks of the 2nd Guards Regiment stood on foot in the 18th century , later used by the tax office. The barracks were destroyed by the bombing at the end of the Second World War, and the circus ring of the former Barlay Circus stood on its foundations between 1949 and around 1960 .

With the foundation stone was laid on 26 June 1981 the construction of the Frederick City Palace on a 7700 sqm large part of this area after the preliminary design of Manfred Prasser and the detailed design of Dieter Bankert an almost three-year construction period began. The new house opened on April 27, 1984. It is a concrete building on a rectangular floor plan , characterized by structured facade elements with round arches. The basic ideas of the interior of the old palace are recognizable in the vestibule , in the corridors, in the foyer and in the chandeliers . The three reliefs on the south side and the relief on the north side of the building were created by the sculptor Emilia N. Bayer . They show the history of the palace as a circus, playhouse and variety theater.

The Friedrichstadt-Palast has a large hall with amphitheatrically arranged seats in 1895 , in which shows are regularly performed. With a total playable area of 2854 m², it has the largest theater stage in the world and, at 24 meters, it has the widest stage portal in Europe. In addition, shows can use the two-meter-high water basin, which can be extended from the lower stage and has a capacity of 140 cubic meters. An ice rink can be used in its place during winter shows. An essential part of the revues is the Friedrichstadt-Palast-Ballet, which consists of 60 dancers and, with 32 dancers , can form the longest row of girls (kickline) in the world.

In 2011, the outdoor facilities on Friedrichstrasse were redesigned with a circumferential staircase in order to emphasize the building architecture. Claire-Waldoff-Platz and the foyer have also been redesigned. This also includes the reconstruction of the former chandelier made of frosted glass tubes in November 2011.

Commemoration

In November 2015, the State Secretary for Cultural Affairs of the State of Berlin, Tim Renner , and the artistic director Berndt Schmidt unveiled a “ memorial for the founding fathers of the Friedrichstadt-Palast ” in honor of Max Reinhardt , Hans Poelzig and Eric Charell . All three, the theater's founder and director, the architect and the entertainer and organizer of many shows, which deprived Nazis , the working principles because they like Reinhardt and Charell Jews were or how Poelzig as representatives of the outlawed degenerate art were considered. The historian Christoph Stölzl was also present at the unveiling as the speaker of the laudation .

The simple CAST memorial block made of cast concrete is the result of an artist competition won by the Berlin duo stoebo - Oliver Störmer & Cisca Bogman. As a conspicuous feature, the memorial block shows a symbolic incised headlight cone on two sides. The imaginary light projection is continued on the street in an oval area that has glitter effects. The memorial symbol thus symbolizes the imaginary beam of light from a theater spotlight and refers to the lack of honorees.

Ensemble direction

The political turning point initially led to the fact that artistic directors were changed, first came Reinhold Strövesand, who was briefly followed by Hans-Gerald Otto. In 1993, the state of Berlin brought Julian Herrey from the Technical University of that time, who was responsible for the production of JazzLeggs . When this flopped and the number of visitors kept falling, the ensemble members fought back. After collecting signatures, resolutions and actions in artist costume in the Berlin House of Representatives , they succeeded in getting Alexander Ilyinsky , who was in the US as chief dramaturge after his expulsion , to be called back to the institution and appointed as director in 1993.

The Berlin Senate also took over the property in 1990 and canceled the planned subsidies of 27 million marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 23 million euros) for the coming season. Rumors were circulating that the property was about to be sold. Of the original 800 employees, 300 had already been laid off in 1990. Good dancers had also migrated to other institutions. The revue Kiek ma an rehearsed by the ensemble had its premiere in September 1990. Der Spiegel had a lot to do with the uncertainties, because under the heading End Times of the Marionettes it criticized the entire facility with the ensemble with the words "national undressing dancers in the cheerfulness combine", to which the "careless state people came out of the poisonous fog of the Leuna and Buna Schlote "streamed to cheer the" palace's own Hochbein-Brigade with old-fashioned Revue magic ". This article, which is level from a journalistic point of view, caused great displeasure among the palace's artists as well as among the East German population.

In 1995 the state-owned GmbH was founded under the director Iljinski , from 2004 to October 2007 it was under the direction of Thomas Münstermann and Guido Herrmann. Since November 1, 2007, Berndt Schmidt has been intendant and sole managing director of Friedrichstadt-Palast. Due to the high losses he encountered when he joined the company, he initially had to lay off 50 employees. However, he succeeded in bringing the Revue Theater out of the red and in the 2009-2013 financial years to achieve the highest ticket sales in the history of the house with 518,670 paying visitors.

In spring 2012, the Friedrichstadt-Palast decided to boycott Russian cultural organizations for an indefinite period against the background of anti-gay laws being passed in St. Petersburg and the planned expansion to all of Russia . On June 23, 2012, the palace management received the special prize for moral courage from the Berliner CSD e. V.

The decision to no longer invite ambassadors from countries that discriminate against people on the basis of their sexual orientation by the state caused a nationwide sensation. A spokesman for the federal government from the CDU and SPD expressed disapproval of the so-called “Pink List”, which includes 83 countries. The palace's “pink list” was the subject of a discussion at the Foreign Office , in which Michael Roth , Boris Dittrich and Selmin Çalişkan as Secretary General of Amnesty International Germany took part on January 28, 2015 .

In addition to Corny Littmann, artistic director Berndt Schmidt is the winner of the MANEO Award 2014 from the Mann-O-Meter advisory and information center , which was presented on October 20, 2014 at the Quatsch Comedy Club .

With 518,670 guests attending the in-house show productions in 2013, the previous visitor record from 2001 was exceeded.

use

As in the old Friedrichstadt-Palast, the new building continued to show regular GDR television shows , including Ein Kessel Buntes . In contrast to the old venue, the individual episodes of the Kessel broadcast changed more frequently between the new Friedrichstadt-Palast and other cultural centers in the districts of the GDR . In memory of its popular presenter Helga Hahnemann , the Golden Hen Prize was awarded every year from 1995 to 2010 in the Friedrichstadt-Palast .

In 2009 the house was the first event cinema for the Berlinale and the venue for the Michael Michalsky fashion show as part of Berlin Fashion Week 2009. On the occasion of the 20th  anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall , on October 31, 2009, George HW Bush , Michail Gorbatschow and Helmut Kohl were in the frame honored at a ceremony of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in the Friedrichstadt-Palast. Federal President Horst Köhler gave the laudatory speech . In addition to Angela Merkel , Norbert Lammert , Hans-Jürgen Papier , numerous ambassadors, former and current federal ministers and prime ministers were also present.

From 2010 to 2013 the Lolas were awarded at the German Film Prize in the Friedrichstadt-Palast . The Quatsch Comedy Club has been located in the former Little Revue in the basement of the Friedrichstadt-Palast since 2002 .

On June 17, 2011, the CSD Gala , which was held for the first time in the Friedrichstadt-Palast, marked the start of the Berlin Pride . In addition to a panel discussion moderated by Wolf-Dieter Poschmann , Cassandra Steen , Volkan Baydar , Imke Duplitzer , Rosa von Praunheim and Gabi Decker were also present as stage guests. As part of the second CSD gala hosted by Inka Bause on June 14, 2013, the Ugandan human rights activist Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera was awarded the CSD Berlin's moral courage prize by Dirk Niebel . Other award winners were the Republic of Argentina and the Berlin lawyer Dirk Siegfried. Manfred Bruns gave the laudatory speech . Drag queens from all over Germany formed the final scene together with the ballet ensemble.

Together with the British choreographer Nikeata Thompson , Tom Hanks trained in May 2014 in the large ballet hall for the melancholy comedy A Hologram for the King of the bestseller by US author Dave Eggers , directed by Tom Tykwer .

In the summer of 2014 Gero von Boehm shot the one-hour comedy documentary No birthday show for ZDF . in the Friedrichstadt-Palast. The occasion was the 50th birthday of Hape Kerkeling in December 2014. The fictitious preparation for a birthday gala only formed the framework, in which interviews with Kerkeling at various locations, private photos and film recordings as well as excerpts from his career were embedded. Barbara Schöneberger acted as moderator . Micky Beisenherz , Costa Cordalis and Joey Heindle played smaller guest roles . It was broadcast on November 30, 2014 on ZDF and in advance on November 29, 2014 on ZDFneo .

In December 2014, Oscar winner Cate Blanchett shot scenes from the show production THE WYLD together with the ballet company in the Friedrichstadt-Palast . Sequences for the art film Manifesto by director Julian Rosefeldt were created . From February to July 2016, Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart is devoting a solo exhibition to the film installation.

On November 2, 2015, around 1900 invited guests from the media, sport, culture, politics, business and social associations honored committed young people for their voluntary work at the Act Now Youth Award ceremony, which took place for the first time . The study commissioned by Christine Henning and Alexander Mazza moderated gala welcomed hostess Auma Obama next Nena and Klaus Meine , Jens Lehmann , Y-Titty and Ralf Moeller as presenters .

World record

On April 27, 2014, the Friedrichstadt-Palast set a Guinness record . From around 320 kg of yeast dough, 150 kg of strawberry jam, 1000 eggs, 40 kg of sugar icing and 200 kg of flour, the longest Berlin pancake series in the world was created over a length of 561 meters . The occasion was the 30th anniversary of the New Friedrichstadt-Palast. The art of baking arranged in the foyer consisted of 6,448 pancakes.

Young ensemble

The Friedrichstadt-Palast maintains the largest children and youth ensemble in Germany. The beginnings of the young ensemble go back to 1945. Around 250 Berlin children and young people from over 20 nations and aged six to 16 receive stage training at the house. Former members are the actresses Paula Beer , Dagmar Biener , Sonja Gerhardt , Olivia Gräser, Matti Krause, Alina Levshin , Patricia Meeden and Julia Richter as well as the actors Lucas Reiber , Justus Schmeck, Bruno Schubert and Benjamin Trinks . The young ensemble was awarded the Berlin State Culture Prize in 1997. In 1997 it was also awarded the German Children's Culture Prize by the German Children's Fund for outstanding work with children and in 2012 again with an honorary award.

On August 30, 2013, the young ensemble opened the citizens' festival organized by Federal President Joachim Gauck on the grounds of Bellevue Palace . On November 11, 2013, Friedrichstadt-Palast and the German Society for the United Nations jointly provided information on climate protection at a press conference. There were also 200 students from the Heide elementary school in Berlin-Adlershof , who celebrated the start of the cooperation with a ceremony on behalf of more than 800 school facilities in Berlin. In collaboration with the young ensemble, the DGVN developed educational materials on climate change that were linked to their children's show Keinschneechaos .

In November 2013, the young ensemble sent giant, pink plush bunnies to the twelve boroughs of Berlin. Around 500 children signed them with their hearts' wishes. The dream come true campaign was carried out in cooperation with the Berlin Regional Association of the German Child Protection Association and the Berlin Advisory Board for Family Issues. The jury included Thomas Härtel and Simon-Paul Wagner .

That is why a flag with a Star of David and the confession of Jewish roots since 1919 in memory of the founder Max Reinhardt was already waving in front of the Friedrichstadt-Palast on November 27, 2019 . The Austrian Reinhardt was stigmatized , persecuted, marginalized and driven into exile by the National Socialists in 1933 , lost his property because he was Jewish and died in exile in 1943. René Pollesch, director of the Volksbühne for decades and its future director, staged the play Faith in the Possibility of Complete Renewal of the World for the 100th anniversary (premiere: October 9, 2019).

Oddities

Parts of the impressive lamps in the foyer are tubes for cattle milking systems that were converted by GDR designers. The more oriental -looking architecture of the new Friedrichstadt-Palast goes back to blueprints that were designed for a cultural palace in Damascus .
