Thomas Härtel

Thomas Härtel (born May 30, 1951 in Berlin ) is a retired German political official ( SPD ). From 1999 to 2007 he was State Secretary in the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Sport and from 2007 to 2011 State Secretary in the Berlin Senate Department for Internal Affairs and Sport.

Life and work

After graduating from the Evangelical High School in the Gray Monastery , Härtel studied educational sciences (adult education) at the Free University of Berlin and graduated as a qualified pedagogue.

He started his career as an administrative manager at the Studentenwerk Berlin from 1978 to 1979. He then became a consultant for health education, training and education in the Berlin Senate Department for Health and Social Affairs.

Thomas Härtel is married.

Härtel has been a member of the SPD since 1970. From 1985 he was district councilor for public education in Berlin-Steglitz and from 1995 there he was district councilor for education, culture, youth and sport as well as deputy district mayor.

From 1999 to 2006, Härtel was State Secretary in the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Sport, led by Klaus Böger . With the formation of the Senate Wowereit III , responsibility for sport was assigned to the Senate Department for Home Affairs. Härtel moved to the internal administration under Ehrhart Körting as State Secretary for Sport .

After the parliamentary elections in 2011 , the CDU was given responsibility for the interior department. Andreas Statzkowski was made State Secretary and Härtel was then put into temporary retirement.

From 2012 to 2016 Härtel was chairman of the Berlin advisory board for family issues. From 2013 to 2017 he was also Vice President of the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS). In 2015 he was elected Vice President Sports Infrastructure of the Berlin State Sports Association. He is a member of the executive board of the SPI Foundation of Arbeiterwohlfahrt Berlin.

In 2018 he was elected President of the Berlin State Sports Association.
