Emilia Nicolova Bayer (born May 5, 1934 in Sofia , Bulgaria) is a German sculptor .

Life

Emilia N. Bayer studied sculpture and ceramics at the Academy of Arts in Sofia (Bulgaria) and graduated in 1964 with a diploma. Since then she has been working as a freelance sculptor. At the same time she dealt with applied graphics, book design and type design.

After a short time, her work received awards at national and international exhibitions and was bought by galleries and collections. In the early 1970s she won her first major work by participating in national competitions.

Facade of the theater in Sofia

1973–1975 she created her main work in Bulgaria - the facade design with approx. 250 m² reliefs on the subject of the development of the drama on the new building of the Sofia theater in the Bulgarian capital. This work is considered a particularly successful synthesis between architecture and sculpture.

In 1975 Emilia Bayer moved to Berlin (GDR). Here, too, she soon managed to make a name for herself as an artist - as evidenced by more than ten monumental sculptures in parks and public buildings. The highlight - and at the same time the beginning of the end - was winning the tender for the artistic facade design on the new Friedrichstadt-Palast (1982–1984). Of the 12 reliefs originally planned, six remained. Four of these were realized. After that, Emilia Bayer was unable to complete any more orders, existing ones were canceled, they were no longer allowed to exhibit and thus received a de facto work and publication ban. When this behavior of the state authorities crystallized, the Bayer family submitted an application for relocation , which was approved after four years - on the condition that they did not stay in West Berlin. The family first moved to Bavaria, returned to Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall and now lives in Bavaria again.

Since her path in her specialty - art in architecture - had been broken off by the reprisals, Emilia Bayer concentrated on new areas. Figurative porcelain design, oil pastel and oil painting have become her main activities in recent years.
