Jiří Vršťala [ˌjɪr̝iː ˈvr̩ʃcala] (born July 31, 1920 in Liberec , Czechoslovakia , † June 10, 1999 in Berlin ) was a Czechoslovak actor and writer. He gained fame primarily through the fictional character he embodied, the clown Ferdinand .

Life

Vršťala worked as a casual worker after graduating from high school. During the Second World War he was used as a forced laborer in the German Reich . Although he had no acting training, he was engaged at the theater in Liberec after 1945 . From there, Vršťala, who had been awarded for the performance of the "puck", received an engagement at the Realistic Theater in Prague. In the 1950s he moved to the Prague City Theater and received offers for films.

In 1955, together with the Czech director Jindřich Polák, he developed the character of the clown Ferdinand for a five-part series for the German TV broadcaster (DFF). Here Vršťala embodied for the first time the figure who made him popular beyond the national borders. He also appeared publicly in this role, especially in children's revues at the Friedrichstadt-Palast and the Kindervarieté Berlin. Vrš Filmala received his first major film role in 1960 under Polák's direction in the Czechoslovak crime film Páté oddělení .

In 1966 he married the actress Angelica Domröse and moved to East Berlin in the GDR . In addition to character roles as a film villain, further DEFA and television films about the clown Ferdinand were made by 1975 . In 1975 he separated from Angelica Domröse and in 1983 Vršťala ended his acting career in order to devote himself to writing. In 1987 he acted again in two Czechoslovak films.

Vršťala last lived in seclusion in Berlin-Pankow and died of cancer shortly before his 79th birthday.
