Christine Kaufmann (2014)

Christine Maria Kaufmann (born January 11, 1945 in Lengdorf , Styria ; † March 28, 2017 in Munich ) was a German - Austrian actress and author .

life and career

Christine Kaufmann was the daughter of the French make- up artist Geneviève Gavaert and the German air force officer Johannes Kaufmann. Her mother had been relocated due to the war, which is why Christine Kaufmann was born in Lengdorf ( Mitterberg-St. Martin municipality ). She grew up in Munich , where she had ballet lessons from childhood , including at the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz , and then at the State Opera Ballet .

At the age of eight she met the director Harald Reinl , who shot Rosen-Resli (1954) with her , one of the first great West German cinema successes after the Second World War . The film made her a child star . In the films A Heart Beats for Erika , When the Alpine Roses are in Bloom or The Singing Angels of Tyrol , she was able to celebrate further great successes.

In 1959 Kaufmann went to Italy , where she played alongside Steve Reeves in The Last Days of Pompeii .

According to his own statements, Kaufmann never went to school, but instead received lessons from changing private teachers during the breaks . She spoke German , English and French .

In Gottfried Reinhardt's 1961 film City Without Pity , she gained international fame alongside Kirk Douglas and won a Golden Globe Award for best young actress in 1962 . While filming Taras Bulba in Argentina , she met Tony Curtis in 1961 , who then separated from his wife, Janet Leigh . In 1963 Kaufmann and Curtis married. The daughters Alexandra and Allegra come from the marriage .

Her professional success in Hollywood was short-lived, so she decided to go into private life. For the love comedy Monsieur Cognac  - with Curtis as a partner - and the German-American production Tunnel 28 , she received only moderate to bad reviews. In her autobiography , Kaufmann expressed herself negatively about these films. In 1968, the marriage with Tony Curtis was divorced.

Kaufmann went back to Germany and made the television film Wie ein Blitz , directed by Rolf von Sydow , which was a great success. After several roles in television series such as Der Kommissar or Derrick , she began to work with the director Werner Schroeter . The results are The Death of Maria Malibran (1971), Willow Springs (1973), Goldflocken (1976) and Day of Idiots (1981). The films Lili Marleen and Lola with Rainer Werner Fassbinder were also made in 1981 . As a stage star, she went on tour with Udo Kier and Salome .

In 1974 and 1999 she posed for Playboy . Most recently she was dubbed “Germany's most beautiful grandmother”. In addition, during this time she had much-noticed appearances under the direction of Helmut Dietl , for example in Der absolut normal Wahnsinn and Monaco Franze - Der eternal Stenz . From 1999 to 2012 Christine Kaufmann presented her own cosmetics and wellness product range at the teleshopping channel HSE24 . In 2011 she took part in the ORF show Dancing Stars , but had to say goodbye in the second show.

From 2014 Christine Kaufmann was seen on theater stages again, most recently in the Landestheater Linz in the play Sparkling Ghosts by Noël Coward and in Der Weibsteufel by Karl Schönherr .

After her marriage to Curtis she was married three times - with the television director Achim Lenz (1974–1976), with the musician and actor Reno Eckstein (1979–1982) and with the draftsman Klaus Zey (1997–2011, split in 2010).

Kaufmann died on March 28, 2017 at the age of 72 in a Munich hospital from complications from a leukemia disease. The funeral service, led by former Abbot Odilo Lechner , took place on March 30th in the closest family circle in the Abbey of St. Boniface . On June 16, 2017, her urn was buried in Vernon near Paris next to her mother Geneviève Gavaert and her grandmother and great-grandmother.
