Rolf von Sydow
Rolf von Sydow (born June 18, 1924 in Wiesbaden ; † June 16, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German director , screenwriter , film producer and book author .
Life
His father came from the old Brandenburg aristocratic family Sydow , his mother Ilse Bayerthal was " half-Jewish " according to the National Socialist definition . That is why, after graduating from the Staatliches Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden in 1942, he was unable to put his childhood dream of becoming an officer or diplomat into practice. However, he served undetected as a tank driver in the Wehrmacht until 1944, was wounded several times and was awarded high medals.
In 1947 he began his career as an actor and assistant director at the theater in Coburg before he went to the RIAS in Berlin and became the youngest radio play director there. In the following years he became known as a director of a number of feature films, theater and television productions, as of Durbridge - films - the three-piece Like a bolt (1970) and the knife (1971) and the two-parter The chain (1977) -, by Film adaptations of several novels by Rosamunde Pilcher and the series Zwei Münchner in Hamburg . In the 1980s he was head of entertainment at Saarland Broadcasting .
Rolf von Sydow was also the author of several books, including the 1983 autobiography Angst zu breathe , in which he describes his youth during the National Socialist era . In addition, an audio book was published in 2004 with excerpts from it that the author read himself. Sydow's other books are also predominantly autobiographical.
Rolf von Sydow lived with his third wife in Berlin. He died in June 2019, two days before his 95th birthday.
