The chain is a two-part German crime film from 1977. It belongs to the series of Durbridge films that have been street sweepers in Germany since 1959 . The director of the film shot for the SWF was Rolf von Sydow .
action
Tom Dawson ( Wolfgang Lukschy ) is fatally hit in the head by a golf ball from Peter Newton ( Klaus Wildbolz ). His son Harry Dawson ( Harald Leipnitz ), an inspector on leave from Scotland Yard, does not believe in an accident. He makes an appointment with Peter Newton, but only finds him murdered in his car in front of his apartment. For Chief Inspector Yardley ( Herbert Fleischmann ) and Inspector Nat Fletcher ( Walter Kohut ) the suspicion now falls on Harry Dawson. However, Dawson's housekeeper Mary Rogers ( Rosemarie Fendel ) also seems to be involved in the matter , whose poodle with a special collar recently ran away and has now reappeared with Sybill Conway ( Margot Hielscher ) and Arnold Conway ( Karl-Heinz Vosgerau ). As a reward, Harry Dawson signs a check that is later found in the apartment of the murdered Peter Newton. Harry Dawson's private investigations also lead to Heaton ( Wolfgang Kieling ), the seller of the collar. Finally, a friend of Peter Newton's, Judy Black ( Uschi Glas ), contributes to the solution . Apparently she knows more about the people behind it and a man with the pseudonym "Tam Owen". A network of a call girl ring is revealed.
background
The two-part series was first broadcast on ARD on December 18 and 20, 1977 in two 90-minute episodes. The audience ratings were over 70% market share, which led to the highest rate in 1977.
After Der Schlüssel (1965), Harald Leipnitz took on the lead role again in a Durbridge film.
Rolf von Sydow has already directed the two other German Durbridge TV adaptations of the 1970s, Das Messer and Wie ein Blitz .
After previous German Durbridge TV adaptations were always at least three-part, the chain was only a two-part film. Later TV adaptations completely renounced the multi-part design.
