Dieter Reith

Dieter Reith (born February 25, 1938 in Mainz ; † April 1, 2020 ) was a German jazz pianist, organist, arranger and composer.

Reith became known in 1972 for composing and arranging the Olympic entry music for the Kurt Edelhagen orchestra together with Peter Herbolzheimer and Jerry van Rooyen . For this, these three musicians were awarded a gold record and the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Live and act

Reith took piano lessons from 1945, initially with a purely classical orientation. From 1956 he played jazz in the “Katakombe” club in Mainz. After graduating from high school in 1958, he studied musicology and experimental physics. He also completed an internship in the field of sound engineering. In 1961 he passed an audition as a pianist with the SWF Big Band, whose pianist he was from 1962 to 1971. From 1970 to 1976 he was also the organist in Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass . From 1971 to 1973 he played the piano in the Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra (WDR). After moving to Stuttgart in 1973, he directed the SWR Big Band and the SWR Radio Orchestra for numerous productions . He also acted as arranger for many TV projects, radio productions and sound carriers. He became known, among other things, for his work for the television program Do you understand fun? , where he was the conductor of the accompanying SWR Big Band from 1980 to 2002. From 1997 he was a member of the GEMA Works Committee .

Reith played with the following musicians, among others: Stan Getz , Jean-Luc Ponty , Art Farmer , Frank Rosolino , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Kenny Clarke , Philip Catherine , Benny Bailey , Slide Hampton , Maynard Ferguson , Toots Thielemans , Herb Geller

He died on April 1, 2020 at the age of 82.
