Stephan Diez

Stephan Diez (born January 6, 1954 in Berlin ; † February 5, 2017 in Hamburg ) was a German jazz and fusion musician (guitar). He lived in Munich in the 1980s, then in Hamburg.

Live and act

Diez, who grew up in Berlin-Zehlendorf and attended the summer jazz course in Remscheid in 1969, played with the Krautrock band Agitation Free in 1973 , but also performed with a jazz track . In 1974 he became a member of Harald Banter's Media Band . In 1975 and 1976 he played in the Chris Hinze Combination . In 1978 he founded his own formation Mirrors with Ack van Rooyen , Gary Todd , Todd Canedy , later Johannes Faber , Heiri Känzig and Lala Kovačev . He also played with Zbigniew Seifert in the band Variospheres . In the following years he performed with various bands across Europe, including Dieter Reith , and has worked as a studio musician, composer and arranger in Munich since 1980. From 1987 he accompanied Konstantin Wecker for three years , but also went on tour with Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez .

Since 1990 he has been a member of the NDR Big Band . At the same time he was appointed professor for jazz guitar at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . In January 2016, Diez retired for health reasons. He died on February 5, 2017 after a long illness.

The guitarist Frank Diez is his older brother.
