Jerry van Rooyen
Jerry van Rooyen (actually Gerard van Rooijen ; * 31 December 1928 in The Hague ; † 14. September 2009 in Goor ) was a Dutch Jazz - Big Band -Head and trumpeter , composer and arranger .
Live and act
Van Rooyen played the trumpet in a marching band at the age of eight and later studied at the Hague Conservatory with the aim of becoming a music teacher. In 1944 he played the trumpet in a vaudeville theater, in 1946 in a band with his brother Ack in the troop support in Indonesia, where they also met the later arranger Rob Pronk . In 1949 he visited New York City with his brother as an exchange student , where he came into contact with Fats Navarro , Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown . From 1955 he played first trumpet in the radio orchestra "The Ramblers" and arranged for it. He also played with his own band. In the 1960s he worked a. a. in Paris , where he directed and arranged an orchestra for Fontana Records. He worked u. a. with Michel Legrand , Claude Bolling , Quincy Jones , Gilbert Bécaud and Marlene Dietrich . In the second half of the 1960s he led the SFB Big Band in Berlin, in which his brother Ack also played the trumpet. In 1972 he was involved in arranging the music for the opening event of the Olympic Games in Munich. Jerry van Rooyen had been Artistic Director at the Hilversums Conservatorium since the early 1980s , where he also taught. From 1985 to 1995 he was director of the WDR Big Band Cologne , which he transformed from a dance orchestra into a jazz big band. Since 1983 he continued to lead the Dutch Jazz Orchestra .
Others
From the mid-1960s he also wrote film music for some German horror and agent films produced by Adrian Hoven (including Jess Franco's Necronomicon - Dreamed Sins ). In the 1990s, excerpts from this film music were published on the CD “At 250 miles per hour”.
The Jerry van Rooyen Award, which is presented annually at the Maastricht Jazz Festival, is named after him.
