Jean Warland (* 23. October 1926 in Brussels as Jean Vandenheuvel ; † 17th June 2015 ) was a Belgian jazz - bassist , composer and arranger . He is considered one of the great European modern jazz double bass players of his generation and one of the "fathers of the Belgian jazz scene."

biography

Warland first learned the accordion as a child . In 1948 he was a member of Bill Alexandre's septet , which appeared in Bœuf sur le Toit in Paris and was considered one of the early bebop formations in European jazz. In the late 1940s he also played in the Toots Thielemans Quartet, with the Bob Shots , Francis Coppieters and John Ward (1949) and in the orchestras of Jean Omer , Fud Candrix , Francis Bay , Jean Robert , Gus Deloof , Bobby Naret and Stan Brenders and Jack Sels . During the 1950s he was mainly active as a session musician and worked a. a. with Stéphane Grappelli , Michel Legrand , Léo Souris and Sacha Distel . In Paris he also played in the large orchestra of Jacques Hélian , where he met Fats Sadi and Kenny Clarke , with whom he would work for many years. During this time Warland also took part in recordings of Lee Morgan , Martial Solal , JJ Johnson , Lucky Thompson , Allen Eager , Henri Renaud and Billy Byers , toured with Caterina Valente in Japan, Latin America and performed at the Paris Olympia .

in 1962 he became a member of the RIAS dance orchestra in Berlin and recorded for Telefunken under his own name . From 1967 to 1992 he lived in Cologne , played with Kurt Edelhagen and then in the WDR Big Band (he also took part in its recordings such as Harlem Story (1984)). He also worked with Charly Antolini ( In the Groove , 1972), Dieter Reith , the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band , Günter Noris , Werner Twardy and performed at concerts by Dizzy Gillespie and Mike Longo . In a smaller formation of Francy Boland and Kenny Clarke he played with their guests such as Don Byas , Fats Sadi, Ronnie Scott , Johnny Griffin , Tony Coe , Eddie Lockjaw Davis and the various guest soloists of the WDR Big Band. In Belgium he played a. a. with Mary Kay, Nathalie Loriers , Sadi, Michel Herr , Richard Rousselet , Toots Thielemans, Félix Simtaine , Al Goyens and the BRT Big Band . His compositions were also played by the ACT Big Band . He himself recorded the 1993 tribute album Sax No End in honor of Francy Boland; In 1997 he performed again at the Middelheim Jazz Festival in Antwerp with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra with a tribute to Francy Boland. In 1998 he was awarded the Belgian Django D'Or special prize for his life's work. In 1999 he appeared with Belgian musicians in the Take a Train Sextet as a tribute to Duke Ellington ; Another formation was Sax Port with a German wind section. In 2005 he toured Germany with saxophonist Fabrice Alleman ; In the same year he presented his bass orchestra with twelve bassists at the Middelheim Festival . In 2010 he published an autobiography Bass Hits (Edition Le Cri).
