Jazz Middelheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jazz Middelheim is a place-find four days in mid-August every year an international jazz festival in Antwerp .

history

The festival first took place in 1969 as a Jazz Promenade in Middelheim Park in Antwerp (hence the name). Its founder and long-time director was the composer Elias Gistelinck (1935–2005), who was the music producer of the Belgian Radio and Televisieomroep , and who also organized a series of concerts in this park in the following years, which were broadcast by radio. In 1973 this resulted in the multi-day summer festival under the name Jazz Middelheim , although the festival was moved from the open-air museum to Park Den Brandt across the street.

Jazz Middelheim took place annually until 1981 ; thereafter the festival was organized every two years. After the 2007 festival, VRT outsourced the organization to Jazz en Muziek vzw , which also ran the Gent Jazz Festival . From then on, Jazz Middelheim took place again as an annual festival. The concerts are broadcast on the music program KLARA of the Flemish Radio.
