Pepe Habichuela
Pepe Habichuela (* 1944 in Granada as José Antonio Carmona Carmona ) is a Spanish flamenco guitarist who is known as one of the great flamenco masters and one of the best contemporary guitarists in Spain .
Habichuela belongs to a Flamenco dynasty of Gitanos that began with his grandfather Habichuela el Viejo (old bean) and was continued by his father José Carmona and his brothers Juan Habichuela (* 1933), Carlos and Luis. In 1964 Habichuela moved to Madrid , where he worked on flamenco performances with artists such as Juanito Valderrama , Camarón de la Isla , Paco de Lucía , Manolo Sanlúcar and Enrique Morente . His tribute album to the singer Antonio Chacón was awarded the national record award in Spain in 1975. His album A Mandeli , a tribute to his grandfather, has cult status in the flamenco scene.
Habichuela is regarded as a representative of flamenco puro , in contrast to his son José Miguel Carmona Niño and his nephews Juan José Carmona Amaya El Camborio and Antonio Carmona Amaya, who form the Nuevo flamenco group Ketama . However, Pepe Habichuela has also dealt with crossover , especially Indian Bollywood music. He has also performed with jazz musicians such as Don Cherry and since 2010 repeatedly with Dave Holland .
