Hamilton de Holanda (born March 30, 1976 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian mandolin player and composer who approaches contemporary jazz with roots in choro .

Live and act

De Holanda grew up in Brasília , where he began playing the mandolin as the son of a musician at the age of five. He first appeared in public when he was six years old. With his brother Fernando César, he founded the group Dois de Ouro , which had released three albums by 2000. Then he directed his own quintet, with which he presented several albums. In the course of his career he has appeared as a soloist and studio musician with musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal , Rosa Passos , Yamandu Costa , Richard Galliano and Stefano Bollani . He now plays a mandolin with ten instead of eight strings, which allows him to play polyphonically and to provide the groove as well as the melody . So he can also play solo programs. He also leads a jazz trio and plays in a percussive dance band.

He taught at the Raphael Rabello Choro Academy .

Prizes and awards

De Holanda received the award for best performer at the Second Choro Festival in Rio de Janeiro in 1995, where his Choro Destroçando a Macaxeira took second place as a composition. In 1998 he was one of the finalists at the Prêmio Visa de MPB Instrumental . Several of his albums were nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2008, 2010 and 2012 . In 2015 he was awarded the Prêmio da Música Brasileira in the category “best instrumental album and best instrumental soloist”.
