Jozef Dumoulin (born April 27, 1975 in Izegem ) is a Belgian jazz pianist who is considered to be the "innovator of the electric piano" ( Michael Rüsenberg ).

Life

As a child, Dumoulin trained in classical piano, harpsichord and organ. He then switched to jazz as an autodidact before studying with Diederik Wissels and Nathalie Loriers at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels from 1994 . He also attended workshops by Enrico Pieranunzi , Mark Levine and Daniel Goyone (composition).

From 1996 to 2002 he worked in a duo with the singer Barbara Wiernik , with whom he recorded the album Eclipse . In 1997 a scholarship enabled him to study with John Taylor at the Cologne University of Music . Here he played in the college's big band under the direction of Bill Dobbins with the soloists Michael Brecker and Dave Liebman .

In 1999 he returned to Belgium, where in 2000 he received the Prize of the Fondation artistique Mathilde E. Horlait-Dapsens . He appeared as a soloist and worked in a duo with the guitarist Daniel Visani and the violinist Jean-Pierre Catoul . He is also a member of Marco Locurcio's sextet (with Gino Lattuca , Martin Gjakonovski , Chander Sardjoe and Jeroen Van Herzeele ). In the improvisation ensemble Othin Spake he worked with Mauro Pawlowski and Teun Verbruggen . In 2014 he presented (according to his own information) the first solo album in the history of the electric piano, on which he skillfully electronically alienated the sounds of a Fender Rhodes .

As a sideman he stepped u. a. with Daniel Romeo , Michel Hatzigeorgiou , Steve Houben , Reggie Washington and Erwin Vann . With the group Bhedam he took part in three India tours, with the Dutch Zapp! strijkkwartet he played music from classical to rock. He has also worked with the Rêve d'éléphant Orchestra , the Brussels Jazz Orchestra , the Bureau of Atomic Tourism , the Vegetal Beauty group and the Dutch Traveling Light Piano Trio . With Warped Dreamer , a quartet made up of Norwegian ( Arve Henriksen , Stian Westerhus ) and Belgian musicians (next to him Teun Verbruggen), he could be heard at the Moers Festival in 2016. Currently (2019) he is also a member of the Stéphane Kerecki Quartet.
