Ramesh Shotham (born May 7, 1948 in Madras ) is an Indian percussionist and drummer of world and fusion jazz .

Live and act

Shotham began his career as a drummer for the Indian rock band Human Bondage after studying zoology . In the mid-1970s he studied the tavil in Madras , a temple music drum widespread in southern India and Sri Lanka , and later at the Karnataka College of Percussion under the direction of master TAS Mani, the classical percussion instruments Ghatam , Mridangam , Kanjira and Morsing . At the end of the 1970s, Shotham met the German ethno pioneers Embryo and worked with Louis Banks . In 1980 he came with the indo-jazz fusion band Jazz Yatra Septet for a three-month tour to Europe, where they recorded the album Sangam .

In 1984 he became Artist in Residence at the Iwalewa House at the University of Bayreuth , and in 1986 he was a guest teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory . Between 1990 and 1993 he took part as a percussionist in three tours organized by the Goethe Institute . He has participated in numerous festivals such as the Berlin Jazz Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Umbria Jazz Festival , the Montreal Jazz Festival , the Festival of Perth and the Buk Festival Korea and has worked with musicians such as Chris Hinze , Steve Coleman , Rabih Abou -Khalil , Károly Binder , Jonas Hellborg , Steve Swallow , Charlie Mariano and from 2009 with the Cologne pianist Jarry Singla . Since 1995 he has been a member of Sigi Schwab's Percussion Project and the Duo Mandala with Sigi Schwab. He worked with the national jazz orchestra and founded formations such as Bhavani (with Mariano, Ara Dinkjian and Arto Tunçboyacıyan ) and Madras Special (with Zoltán Lantos , violin, Christian Zürner , bass, Mike Herting , piano and Sandhya Sanjana , vocals), with which he has his own Compositions played.

In 1997 he appeared in Carla Bly's performance of Escalator over the Hill at the MusikTriennale Cologne , in 1998 with Steve Coleman in India, and later at a world music festival with the oud player Mohammed Zinelabidin in Tunisia . He also acted in the film Heartbeat of the Continents of Manfred Waffender with, are presented in the different drum styles.

Between 2001 and 2004 he made tours with his group Madras Special through Holland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Great Britain. He continued to tour with the Karnataka College of Percussion Quartet . In 2006 he recorded the album "Transcontinental" with guitarist Peter Autschbach and his band Terminal A. He is currently working with the WDR Big Band Cologne , with Jarry Singlas Mumbai Project and with Wolfgang Niedecken . He was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize 2018 in the music cultures category .
