Manfred Waffender

Manfred Waffender (* 1952 in Alzey ) is a German director , journalist , publisher and author .

Waffender studied in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin and then worked as an assistant director in London at the Almost Free Theater experimental stage . In the late 1970s he lived as a freelance journalist in California , where he wrote travel books and reports on the youth subculture. In the early 1980s he became a lecturer at Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag in Hamburg , where he was co-editor of the series anders reisen and conceived the non-fiction series rororo computer . His first documentary films were made during this time.

In the 1990s, Waffender made not only industrial and advertising films, but also music films and the like. a. with the Kronos Quartet , Steve Reich , Wladimir Tarassow , Toots Thielemans , Maria João , Alexander von Schlippenbach and Ramesh Shotham . In 2000, on a musical pilgrimage with the conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner , the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists chamber orchestra, the film Bach Cantata Pilgrimage was made in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach .

In 2001 he was appointed professor for media dramaturgy at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . Since March 2006 he has been managing director of the Institute for Music and Media.
