Antonio de Hornedo Correa

Antonio de Hornedo Correa SJ (born September 23, 1915 in Comillas , Spain , † January 10, 2006 in Lima ) was a Peruvian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Chachapoyas .

Life

Antonio de Hornedo Correa joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 17 on May 27, 1933 , in Belgium, because the government of Manuel Azaña took action against the order and many Spanish Jesuits had to go abroad. After the end of the Spanish Civil War , he returned to Spain in 1940 and studied philosophy at the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo in Madrid-Chamartín until 1943 and theology in Ireland from 1943 . He was ordained a priest on July 31, 1949 . From 1951 to 1961 he was active in the training of novices .

In 1961 Antonio de Hornedo Correa was sent to the Jesuit mission in Peru, on the Río Marañón and its tributaries, and appointed superior of the Jesuit community in Jaén . On August 6, 1963 he was appointed Prefect of Jaén en Peru and with the elevation of the prefecture to the Apostolic Vicariate on April 24, 1971 to the Apostolic Vicar of Jaén en Peru o San Francisco Javier and titular Bishop of Castellum Minus . He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Archbishop Luigi Poggi , on August 15, 1971. Co- consecrators were Luis Armando Bambarén Gastelumendi SJ, Auxiliary Bishop in Lima , and Manuel Prado Pérez-Rosas SJ, Bishop of Chachapoyas .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 9, 1977 Bishop of Chachapoyas. The main concerns of his episcopal activity were the care of the elderly, education and training of the youth, the health of children and the evangelization of the media. Pope John Paul II accepted his retirement on May 18, 1991. He spent his retirement in the community of Fatima in Miraflores in Lima , where he also died.

Antonio de Hornedo was buried in the cathedral of the episcopal city of Chachapoyas .
