Live and act

Schilkloper began to learn alto horn at the age of six. Between 1967 and 1974 he was trained on the French horn at the military music school in Moscow. After two years of military service, he studied music at the Moscow Gnessin Institute from 1976 to 1981 . At the same time he began his career in the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theater , but also with his first jazz activities. From 1984 he appeared in a duo with his colleague from the Bolshoi Theater, the bassist Michail Karetnikow, with whom he recorded the LP Движение ( Dwischenie , German " movement "). From 1985 to 1989 he played with Arkady Kiritschenko and Sergey Letow in the band Tri-O (LP Three Holes ). He has been working with the pianist Michail Alperin since 1988 , initially as a duo ( Wave of Sorrow , ECM 1989, and Live in Grenoble , 1993) and since 1990 with Sergey Starostin as the Moscow Art Trio . This trio has been documented on several albums and has performed successfully at international festivals. He also appeared at the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden in 1993 with Rabih Abou-Khalil , Jasper van't Hof , Renaud Garcia-Fons , Howard Levy , Christof Lauer , Eric Vloeimans , Vitold Rek , Marco AmbrosiniMichael Bardo Henning . At Jazzahead 2015 he presented his duo with the young Ukrainian jazz pianist Vadim Neselovskyi .

He continued to work with Lionel Hampton , Lew Soloff , Elvin Jones , Jon Sass, Louis Sclavis , Christian Muthspiel , Octet Ost and the larger Alperin line-ups and was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra . He presented three solo records ( overdubbing ) ( Hornology , 1995, Pilatus 2001, Zum Gipfel und zurück , 2007). Since 1994 he has been a member of the Ensemble Pago Libre . In 2003 he played several concerts with the VSP Orkestra and recorded a CD, LP and DVD with this band. In 2004 he gave the world premiere of the Concerto for Alphorn and Orchestra by Daniel Schnyder , a work commissioned by the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad ; In 2005 and 2010 he appeared as a soloist of the same work at the Crested Butte Music Festival in the US state of Colorado .

Schilkloper transferred contemporary instrumental techniques such as overdubbing to the French horn and later also to the alphorn. His control of the alphorn and his creativity as a wind player have set a new standard , according to Leonard Feather .
