Life

There is no reliable knowledge about the earlier years of Otto Jageteufel's life. He is said to have achieved respect and prosperity from a humble background, possibly also to have moved here from outside, since with him the name Jageteufel first appeared in Stettin. The mayor of Szczecin Paul Friedeborn reports in his town chronicle published in 1613 of a successful company in which Otto Jageteufel met the Pomeranian Duke Swantibor III. (I.) brought to Stettin safely from the Elbe before Margrave Otto V of Brandenburg .

After Friedeborn he became councilor in Stettin in 1370 and mayor in 1384. The first written mention of Otto Jageteufel comes from the year 1377, as a councilor from 1382 and as mayor in 1387. During his time as a council member, he took part in several Hanseatic meetings in Stralsund , Lübeck , Helsingborg and Rostock .

The name Otto Jageteufel often appeared in the city's books in connection with legal transactions. In the years after 1400 there seem to have been two other people with the same name in Szczecin. He was married to Lutgardis Hohenholz, the marriage remained childless. After his death in 1412 he was buried in the Szczecin Franciscan monastery.

He made a lasting name for himself by having a considerable part of his fortune set up a foundation in his will to provide accommodation, food, clothing and education for 24 poor boys. The college of the Jageteufel Foundation existed until the first half of the 20th century.
