Gottfried von Bülow

Gottfried von Bülow (born July 16, 1831 in Gnadenfrei , Reichenbach district ; † March 6, 1907 in Stettin ; full name Gottfried Johannes Gottlob von Bülow ) was a German archivist and historian . He was the director of the State Archives in Stettin , researched and published on the history of Pomerania and wrote numerous articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

Life

Gottfried von Bülow came from the von Bülow family and was the son of a Prussian officer. He was born in 1831 in Gnadenfrei in Silesia . After attending the pedagogy in Niesky , he attended the theological seminar of the Brethren in Gnadenfeld . He initially worked as a teacher in Brethren schools in England , Niesky, Christiansfeld and Lausanne .

In 1868, Bülow gave up teaching and joined the Prussian archives service. He first worked at the State Archives Magdeburg , took leave in 1869 for studies and doctorate at the University of Greifswald to Dr. phil. .

In 1871, Bülow began working at the Szczecin State Archives as an archive assistant, and later he became head of the State Archives. During his tenure, the State Archives first moved from the previous narrow premises to a wing of the Szczecin Palace and then in 1900 received its own archive building. In 1888 von Bülow was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV. Class, later III. Class with a bow. In 1901, Bülow had to give up his post after a stroke. He died in Stettin in 1907, where he was buried in the main cemetery.

Bülow researched and published on the history of Pomerania and the family history of his own family. He published numerous personal articles in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . He was a member of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology and for several years editor of the journal Baltic Studies .

Bülow had been married to Ida von Dewitz , daughter of Major General August von Dewitz , since 1871 . The marriage remained childless.
