Thom Willems

Thom Willems (* 1955 in Arnhem ) is a Dutch composer .

From 1977 to 1982 Willems studied electronic music with Jan Boerman and Dick Raaijmakers and composition with Louis Andriessen at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague .

From 1984 he worked with William Forsythe , who took over the direction of the ballet of the Frankfurt Opera that year . He composed a. a. the music for his choreographies LDC , The Inquiry of Robert Scott , Eidos: Telos and Self meant to Govern . In 1987 the piece In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated was written for dancers from the Paris Opera .

Until the end of the 1980s, Willems worked on his compositions with rhythmically manipulated tape recordings, after which he switched to composing with computer technology. In addition to ballet music performed in Frankfurt, Paris, San Francisco, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, he also composed works for television, radio and film. Since 2006 he has been composer in residence of the Le Caméléon Philharmonique ensemble .
