Live and act

Banks comes from a musical family: his grandfather Bakhat Bahadur Budapirti was the composer of the hymn śrīmān gambhīra nepālī , which served as the national anthem in Nepal between 1962 and 2006 ; his father moved in the early 1940s to Calcutta to there as a trumpet player by the name of George Banks to play in a European dance orchestra. The son, who was now called to Louis Armstrong Louis by his father, received music lessons early on from his father and a neighbor. After finishing school he attended St. Joseph's College in Darjeeling, where he learned the piano , guitar and trumpet.

At the age of 13 he played in his father's band; soon he became a professional musician. In the late 1960s he played with regional orchestras in Kathmandu . In 1971 he moved to Calcutta, where he formed the Louis Banks Brotherhood with saxophonist Braz Gonsalves and singer Pam Crain . In 1974 he became a member of the orchestra of Rahul Dev Burman ; he moved to Bombay , where he established live jazz in nightclubs. With Braz Gonsalvez he founded his indo-jazz ensemble in 1979 . In 1980 he performed at the Jazz Yatra Festival with Ravi Shankar to perform his composition "Jazzmine". With RA Ramamani , TAS Mani and Ramesh Shotham , he formed the band Sangam , which also toured Europe and was used by Charlie Mariano for recordings ( Bangalore . 1998). He also recorded with the dissidents ( Pankuj Parahar , 1992). In 2005 he formed the group Rhythm Asia with Taufiq Qureshi on tabla and Niladri Kumar on sitar . In 2008 he was involved as a pianist and co-producer on the Miles Davis tribute album Miles from India , which was nominated for a Grammy in the same year , as did John McLaughlin's album Floating Point , on which he also played keyboards. With Shankar Mahadevan, Sivamani and Karl Peters he then formed the band Silk , which specialized in world music. With his son, the drummer Gino Banks, he could also be heard in the band Fusion Yatra . In 2013 he founded the band Ganga Shakti , which includes Sharmistha Chatterjee, Finix Ramdas, Mohini Dey and Gino Banks.

As a film composer, he wrote the music for numerous Indian films, for example by Bharat Dabholkar . The music for the short television film Mile Sur Mera Tumhara , created in 1988 , became particularly popular, so that it was also referred to as a kind of unofficial national anthem. The Bundesjazzorchester also performed compositions by him on its 2011 tour of India.
