RA Ramamani
RA Ramamani (* around 1956) is an Indian singer, composer and teacher.
Life
Ramamani studied music at the University of Bangalore (Master 1977). She is a virtuoso of the classical carnatic music that is cultivated in South India. In 1978 she founded the indo-jazz combo Sangam with her husband, the percussionist TAS Mani , Ramesh Shotham and the jazz pianist Louis Banks , from which her band Jazz Yatra later emerged. In 1980 she toured Europe with the Dissidents and the Karnataka College of Percussion . In 1983 she performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival together with saxophonist Charlie Mariano . In the same year ECM released the joint album Jyothi . In 2000, Mike Herting organized a first meeting of Ramamani, the percussionists and the WDR Big Band Cologne , which was documented on CD ( Sketches of Bangalore ). In 1987 she went on a European tour with Lennart Åberg and Oriental Wind . Ramamani then founded the ensemble KCP 5 with Herting, Mariano, TAS Mani and Ramesh Shotham , which also performed at the Moers Festival in 1999 and the Leverkusener Jazz Days in 2003. She has also recorded with Okay Temiz and with David Rothenberg . In 2007 she was a guest at Century of Song at the RuhrTriennale .
Ramamani heads the Karnataka College of Percussion together with TAS Mani and also teaches at other institutions such as the Choreographic Institute in Bangalore.
Honourings and prices
Ramamani received the Ganakalashree Prize of the Karnataka Ganakala Parishat in 1992 . In the same year the Indian Society of the Arts declared her the best vocalist.
