Ranjit Barot

Ranjit Barot (* 1950 ) is an Indian musician ( drums , vocals , arrangement ) and film composer who is also active in the field of fusion jazz .

Barot grew up in a family steeped in Indian classical music and dance; his mother was the dancer Sitara Devi . He received a few tabla lessons from Alla Rakha and then switched to drums. At the age of 16 he played in a local rock band. Then he replaced Trilok Gurtu in the prog rock band Waterfront . In 1980 he toured Europe with the Jazz Yatra Sextet around Louis Banks ; parallel he joined the ensemble Jazz Mine of Ravi Shankar with John Handy , George Adams and Mike Richmond on. He continued to play at European festivals until 1982 and also recorded the album Sangam ( Eigelstein ) in 1982 . In 1982 he performed with Don Cherry at the Jazz Yatra Festival in Bombay.

Then Barots worked in the Indian film industry for almost two decades, mainly in music production and composition, with AR Rahman , Anu Malik and Ismail Darbar , among others ; he was also the drummer and arranger for Rahul Dev Burman , Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji .

In 1994 Barot's debut album Oh Darling Yeh Hai India was released , followed by Seduction in 1997 . Since 2006 he played with John McLaughlin ; since 2009 he has been part of its 4th Dimension and has now recorded four studio albums with him, Gary Husband and Étienne M'Bappé . He also founded his own band; In 2010 he released his third album Bada Boom with different line-ups of musicians such as Zakir Hussain , John McLaughlin, U. Shrinivas , U. Rajesh, Scott Kinsey, Matt Garrison , Wayne Krantz , Dominique di Piazza , Harmeet Manseta, Taufiq Qureshi , Nicolas Fiszman , Tim Garland , Gwilym Simcock , Aydın Esen and Elie Afif . In 2008 he was involved in the Bob Belden- produced tribute album A Celebration of the Music of Miles Davis: Miles from India (where he interpreted Jean Pierre with Mike Stern , Adam Holzman and Robert Irving III ). He also worked with Jonas Hellborg , Mattias Eklundh and Mohini Dey .

In 2010 he was the composer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
