Taufiq Qureshi (* 1962 in Bombay ) is an Indian classical musician ( percussion , drums , voice , composition ) who is also active in the field of fusion music .

Live and act

Qureshi comes from a family of musicians: his father was the tabla virtuoso Alla Rakha ; the tabla players Zakir Hussain (* 1951) and Fazal Qureshi (* 1961) are his older brothers. Like these, his father taught him how to play the hand drums at an early age. But his eldest brother also influenced him a lot, so that he not only oriented himself towards classical North Indian music, but also followed his brother's fusion experiments in bands such as Shanti, Diga, Shakti or Rhythm Experience very carefully. As an autodidact , he also learned a variety of percussion instruments from other cultures, such as Djembe, Daff , Bongos or Batajon ; he also received guidance from Vikku Vinayakram . Ultimately he developed his own rhythmic language to adapt the tabla syllables to the African djembe and thus to introduce the djembe into Indian music.

Qureshi began his career early on as an interpreter of north Indian classical music and accompanied musicians such as Hariprasad Chaurasia , Sultan Khan or Brij Bhushan Kabra . In 1986 he also founded his world music band Surya . In 1988 he toured Germany with his father and oldest brother. In the early 1990s he presented his first albums under his own name. Louis Banks brought him and the sitar player Niladri Kumar into his group Rhythm Asia . In 2008 he was involved in the Bob Belden- produced tribute album A Celebration of the Music of Miles Davis: Miles from India . The following year he became a percussionist on with a Grammy winning album Global Drum Project by Mickey Hart presented and the previous tour. His brother Zakir Hussain also brought him to appearances at Remember Shakti and his own projects Masters of Percussion and Summit . He is currently running his own Süm project . He also played in the band Sangam by Gino and Louis Banks.

With a good feel for the world of sound with its fine nuances, he also became a sought-after rhythm programmer, arranger, composer and percussionist for studio recordings, for example in Indian film production.
