Fazal Qureshi

Fazal Qureshi (born February 13, 1961 in Bombay ) is an Indian classical musician ( percussion , voice , composition ) who is also active in the field of fusion music .

Qureshi comes from a family of musicians: his father was the tabla virtuoso Alla Rakha ; the tabla players Zakir Hussain (* 1951) and Taufiq Qureshi (* 1962) are his brothers. Like these, his father taught him how to play the hand drums at an early age. Like his brothers, he not only oriented himself towards classical North Indian music, but was also interested in fusion experiments in bands like Shakti or Rhythm Experience .

Qureshi began his career early on as an interpreter of north Indian classical music and accompanied musicians such as Hariprasad Chaurasia , Nandkishor Muley , or Kamalesh Maitra . In 1982 he took part in the Jazz Yatra festival. He also toured with his father and oldest brother, with whom the albums Triveni and The Family Tree were created. Since 1987 he has been part of the Swedish fusion band Mynta , with whom he has released six albums and toured worldwide. Furthermore, there was cooperation with Sultan Khan and Jonas Hellborg and with Kudsi Ergüner . With the London percussionist Pete Lockett , he released the album Melody of Rhythm in 2016 . Since 2012 he has been teaching at the Ustad Alla Rakha Institute of Music in Shivaji Park, Dadar; he also composed for the film.
