U. Shrinivas ( Upalappu Shrinivas ; born February 28, 1969 in Palakol , Andhra Pradesh , † September 19, 2014 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian mandolinist who has its musical origins in the Carnatic music tradition (South Indian classical music). He became internationally known through his collaboration with John McLaughlin on the "Remember Shakti" project.

Musical career

At the age of six, Shrinivas started playing satyanarayana on his father's mandolin. When he noticed his talent, he taught him what he knew about carnatic music. A short time later, his father's Guru Rudraraju Subbaraju (a well-known Carnatic singer) recognized his potential and began to teach him. Since Rudraraju Subbaraju did not play mandolin, he sang Shrinivas to what he was supposed to play.

From an early age he was one of the child prodigies of carnatic music and was the first known carnatic mandolinist. The Indian mandolin bears little resemblance to the European mandolin. It has five strings and is more reminiscent of a small electric guitar . Shrinivas adapted it to the requirements of the carnatic music in which it established itself.

Shrinivas made his first public appearance in 1978 at the Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival (a festival of carnatic music) in Gudivada ( Andhra Pradesh , India). Three years later he played during the Madras Music Season . In 1983 he took part in the Berlin Jazz Days . Shrinivas performed worldwide and directed the Shrinivas Institute of World Music , a music school he founded.

collaboration

Shrinivas played with the western musicians John McLaughlin, Michael Brook , Nigel Kennedy , Naná Vasconcelos , Michael Nyman as well as with Indian musicians such as Hariprasad Chaurasia , Zakir Hussain and V. Selvaganesh .
