Braz Gonsalves
Braz Gonsalves (born February 3, 1934 in Neura ) is an Indian jazz musician ( soprano and alto saxophone , clarinet ). He is considered one of the great saxophonists in India and one of the outstanding musicians of contemporary jazz in Goa .
Gonsalves received his musical training first in the church choir and on the violin . He also learned Indian classical music, but also heard Artie Shaw recordings . He first worked as an entertainment musician before becoming one of the pioneers of indo jazz rock and recording the album Raga Rock in Calcutta in 1970 . The Indian government sent him to numerous international jazz festivals. Among others he played with Charlie Byrd , Eddie Daniels , Sadao Watanabe and Paul Gonsalves , but also with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ,Zakir Hussain , Trilok Gurtu , Hariprasad Chaurasia , Shankar Mahadevan and Siva Mani . In 1980/1981 he went on a world tour with the Jazz Yatra Sextet around Louis Banks . As a studio musician, he was involved in numerous recordings of albums and soundtracks.
Gonsalves was awarded the Digambar Kamat Prize for his contribution to the culture of Goa.
