Elias Gistelinck

Elias Gistelinck (born May 27, 1935 in Beveren-Leie , † March 25, 2005 in Huldenberg ) was a Belgian composer , trumpeter and music producer .

Live and act

Gistelinck began to study trumpet, chamber music , harmony and counterpoint at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels at the age of 15 . At the age of seventeen Gistelinck played the trumpet in the National Orchestra of Belgium. In 1953 he was a prize winner of the international music competition in Munich. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris . In 1962 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses . He also toured Europe as a trumpeter with a jazz orchestra .

From 1961 Gistelinck worked for the Belgian radio and Televisieomroep , initially as a freelance assistant and later as the first producer of the classic program Radio 3 (until 1994). There he promoted Belgian composers and Belgian music productions, but also jazz, a. a. as producer of the BRT Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Etienne Verschueren . In 1969 he founded the music festival Jazz Middelheim , which he directed for many years.

Gistelinck wrote numerous compositions for chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras, where he was part of the Third Stream at times . Some of his works have also been published on record or CD.

Jazz singer David Linx and arranger / producer Peter Gistelinck are among his children.

Prizes and awards

Gistelinck received the Fuga Prize for his commitment to promoting Belgian music. Furthermore he received u. a. the Belgian Music Press Prize and the Belgian Art Promotion Prize. For his work Ndessé ou Blues , based on poems by Léopold Sédar Senghor , which he was able to realize as a production for the Belgian radio, he was awarded the Prix ​​Italia of the RAI in 1969 in the category “musical compositions with words”. In France he was awarded the Prix ​​de la Fondation de France for his complete work.
