Palle Mikkelborg (born March 6, 1941 ) is a Danish jazz trumpeter , flugelhorn player, band leader, composer and arranger of jazz fusion music , but also contemporary classical music.

Live and act

Mikkelborg began playing the trumpet in 1956 (on which he is self-taught in his own words) and has been a professional jazz musician since 1960. He has recorded with the big bands of Gil Evans , George Russell , Kurt Edelhagen , Peter Herbolzheimer , with Dexter Gordon , Terje Rypdal , Karin Krog , Jan Garbarek , Gary Peacock , Dino Saluzzi , Abdullah Ibrahim , Trilok Gurtu , among others . With the drummer Alex Riel he had a quintet from 1967, with whom he also appeared in 1970 in Montreux and Newport . In the 1970s they both had a jazz fusion group called V 8 . A highlight of his work is his work on Miles Davis' 1984 album Aura , which he composed for Miles Davis (as a homage to his musical role model, on the occasion of the presentation of the Danish Léonie Sonning Music Prize to Davis in 1984) and its recording with the Danish Radio Big Band he led. With Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Kenneth Knudsen he had the trio Heart to Heart . He also leads his own groups and plays with his wife, the Welsh harpist Helen Davies . In addition to jazz and world music , influences of modern classical music ( Charles Ives , Olivier Messiaen ) also flow into his compositions and arrangements .

Prizes and awards

In 2001 Mikkelborg received the Nordic Council Music Prize . In 2003 he was awarded the Danish Django d'Or as a legend of jazz . In 2013 he was awarded the Ben Webster Prize of Honor .
