Werner Twardy (born December 28, 1926 in Oberhausen ; † January 16, 1977 in Kleineichen near Cologne ) was a German composer , arranger , pianist , organist , conductor and music producer . He also appeared under the pseudonyms Daddy Monrou , TW Ardy and Dicky Gray .

life and work

Twardy studied harmony and composition at the Folkwang School in Essen and initially worked as a jazz pianist , especially in American officers' casinos. He was a member of a smaller formation of the trumpeter Charly Tabor , which also included the saxophonists Delle Haensch , Max Greger and Paul Martin as well as the drummer Teddy Paris. He also worked with trumpeters Fred Bunge and Hanne Wilfert , trombonist Otto Bredl and saxophonists Paul Biste and Bubi Aderhold in Joe Wick's band . Since 1950 he has been part of one of Fred Bunge's smaller formations. With this formation, the Fred Bunge And His Dixieland Band , a record was made in 1951 (Blues Improvisation / Shine, Astra Schall AW 4000). After a brief engagement with Fred Spannuth , a radio engagement took him to Hamburg in 1950, where he worked for NDR a . a. worked with Bert Kaempfert and the orchestra leader and singer Hans Köpke and also studied at the Heinrich Schenker Academy with Felix-Eberhard von Cube. At the end of 1952, Twardy then received an engagement as a pianist in Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra at the SWF in Baden-Baden . He was Heinz Kiessling's successor here , but was replaced by Werner Drexler in 1953 . As part of his engagement with Kurt Edelhagen, there were also recordings on April 24 and June 22, 1953, in which Twardy acted as a soloist (An American in Paris / Summertime, Brunswick 82755 and Hawaiian War Chant / Tenderly, Brunswick 82768). Twardy wrote numerous arrangements for Edelhagen's band and between 1952 and 1955 was also a pianist member of the jazz combo Edelhagen All Stars , who played modern jazz and arranged for other formations, among others. a. for Adalbert Luczkowski , Franz Thon and Alfred home . From 1953 up to and including 1960 he was a member of the small dance and entertainment orchestra of the WDR . In 1954 he toured as a pianist with the Helmut Weglinski Sextet . In 1956 he took part in the recordings for the soundtrack of the film Die Halbstarken (music: Martin Böttcher ) as the pianist of the Mister Martins Band , where he played alongside greats such as Horst Fischer , Fatty George , Ernst Mosch , Werner Baumgart , Gerald Weinkopf , Cornelis op den Zieken , Bill Grah , Siegfried Enderlein, Rolf Ahrens and Hans Last . In 1957 Twardy joined Edelhagen's move to WDR in Cologne, where he occasionally worked as an arranger for the Edelhagen Orchestra. Changing engagements between the WDR and the NDR meant that he commuted between Hamburg and Cologne for several years. So he took u. a. In 1958 he took part as a pianist in the first concert of the NDR jazz workshop initiated by Hans Gertberg , which continued the NDR studio jazz concert series that had existed since 1952. Here Twardy played with well-known jazz greats of his time, such as Fred Christmann , Albert Mangelsdorff , Glen Buschmann , Attila Zoller , Hans Last, Peter Trunk and Karl Sanner . Around 1960 Twardy was co-founder, arranger and pianist of the Willi Surmann Saxtett at NDR , to which Hans Last and Rolf Ahrens also belonged. According to Tom Lord, Twardy was involved in a total of five recordings as a pianist in the field of jazz music between 1951 and 1960, although significantly more recordings can be documented. Since the late 1950s, Twardy has also directed his own studio and accompanying orchestra, with which he has numerous titles, including a. for the record labels Heliodor , Polydor , Vogue and Electrola recorded and arrangements, etc. a. for Peter Alexander and Bill Ramsey , wrote. With his recording of the title Geisterreiter (Riders in the Sky / Columbia) composed by Stan Jones , he reached number 21 in the German single charts with his orchestra on May 6, 1961.

At the end of 1958 he worked for the producer Kurt Feltz in Cologne , for whose production he also appeared as a composer for the first time. a. with titles for Margot Eskens and Margrit Imlau. From 1961 he worked almost without exception for the producer and orchestra director Hans Bertram , for whose successful music production he worked as a composer, arranger, conductor and organist. From then on, Twardy concentrated primarily on composing. He created numerous titles, often in collaboration with the lyricist Lilibert , whose pseudonym was Elisabeth Bertram, the wife of Hans Bertram. He achieved his first respectable successes and chart placements with compositions for Will Brandes , Trude Herr and the medium trio . He was the creative head behind the popular babysitter wave, which began with the German recording of the babysitter boogie by Ralf Bendix , which was recorded in 1961 under the direction of Hans Bertram in the Electrola studio in Cologne. Twardy's clever arrangement of the American title by Buzz Clifford, in which Bertram's daughter Elisabeth took over the baby part as "little Elisabeth", not only established a series of similar titles, but also became a global success of millions. In the wake of this success, Twardy achieved two more respectable successes in the following years. With Will Brandes and little Elisabeth, the Boogie was followed by a Baby-Twist (1962) and a Baby-Babbel-Bossa-Nova (1963), with the already tried and tested background (producer Bertram, copywriter Lilibert and the not quite so little Elisabeth) became bestsellers. By far the greatest success of his career was achieved by Twardy with his compositions for Roy Black and Chris Roberts , for which he wrote several hits and whose characteristic style he shaped. With titles like "It's nice to be in the world" (Roy Black and Anita), "Your most beautiful gift" (Roy Black) and "I'm in love with love" (Chris Roberts), he celebrated his greatest successes as a composer for the "Hitfabrik Bertram". Twardy was the man in the background all his life. So he accompanied z. B. Roy Black on all his tours as a pianist and orchestra leader until 1973, B. also in 1971 together with the Jochen Brauer sextet on a Mediterranean cruise on the Neckermann ship. Between 1969 and 1972, Twardy was also responsible for the music for some films in which the popular pop singers starred. For the record label Polydor , Bertram produced a whole series of long-playing records in big band and easy listening sound (above all the instrumental series In Gold , e.g. Hammond in gold , clarinet in gold , trumpet in gold , piano in gold , Trombone in gold ), for which Twardy contributed numerous arrangements and played the Hammond organ under the pseudonym TW Ardy . During this time he worked with well-known instrumentalists such as Henry Arland , Horst Fischer , Marek & Vacek , Fritz Schulz-Reichel , Heinz Schachtner , Leif Uvemark , Otto Bredl and Jiggs Whigham and recorded two instrumental singles under the pseudonym Dicky Gray. He also wrote numerous arrangements for the Günter Kallmann Choir , the Fischer Choirs and the Medium Trio.

After separating from successful producer Bertram in 1973, Twardy, who was called the “white giant” because of his “snow-white Caesar's head” and his stature - a trademark that Roy Black gave him - seldom worked for the Polydor. But he remained an all-rounder. In addition to hit compositions for Paola , Manuela , Roberto Blanco , Bert Beel , Lars Berghagen and lesser-known performers such as Maren, Hans-Gerd Fischer, Manuel Beck, Mario Aita and Frank Marwin, instrumental couplings with his orchestra and a smaller formation, among others Werner Dies , Karl-Heinz Kästel, Jean Warland , Ferdy Klein and Ronnie Stephenson belonged to other labels. The eponymous Seasons in White of his long-playing record from 1975 was used in the 14th episode of the crime series Derrick ( The Day After the Murder ). During this time he also appeared several times as a music producer and was active in promoting young talent. With his title, Applause for a totally crazy house , interpreted by Maggie Mae , he achieved third place in the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest . Most recently he was the musical director for the ZDF broadcasts Musik ist Trumpf with Peter Frankenfeld and Spiel mir eine Alte Melody with Lou van Burg . Twardy had his last television appearance as the orchestra leader of the show Musik ist Trumpf on November 27, 1976 in Berlin.

Twardy died of liver failure at the age of only 50.
