Renate Kern (born January 23, 1945 in Tann / Rhön ; † February 18, 1991 in Hoyerswege / Ganderkesee , Lower Saxony ), real name Renate Hildebrandt, geb. Poggensee , was a German hit and country singer. She also appeared under the stage names Nancy Wood and Nathalie de Navarre .

Career

Renate Kern was the daughter of rocket technician Karl Poggensee (1909–1980). The connections to radio and television established during a school exchange in the USA in 1962 prompted Renate Kern to give up her original career aspiration - teacher. Discovered by Werner Last aka Kai Warner , James Last's brother , the singer with the deep voice quickly made a career, mostly with lyrics that encouraged people or gave advice. From 1965 to the mid-1970s she was under contract with the record company Polydor .

Her first singles appeared in 1965 and immediately hit the German charts: Kiss and Shake (35th place) and You are my love (39th place). She celebrated her biggest hit in 1968 with love to cry in happiness (10th place). You have to flink your eyelashes (1968, place 30), Let the sunshine (1969, place 18), Lieber Today Kissed (1969, place 30) and All flowers need sun (1970, place 27) are also among her great successes . With All Flowers Need Sun , she was able to achieve second place at the German Schlager Competition in Mainz in 1970 .

After a few more hit parades, television appearances, and touring, her career stagnated in the early 1970s, and her star continued to decline towards the end of the decade. Their last hit listing in the German single charts dates back to 1974 ( Wenn du go ). At this point she had left the Polydor record company and signed a contract with BASF. A number of singles appeared here. In 1974 she married the sound engineer Klaus-Dieter Hildebrandt. The couple founded their own music publishing company and produced a. a. the Schlager duo Mona & Michael . Furthermore, they set up a recording studio in their common house , where u. a. Roger Whittaker recorded records. In 1976 she achieved another small hit in the radio hit lists ( Tonio , 46th place). The following year she switched to the Crystal / EMI label, but there was no comeback here either. In 1976 she sang in French under the name Nathalie de Navarre .

In 1981, Kern not only changed the genre - from hit to country - she also adopted a new international stage name: Nancy Wood . In the USA she released the song Imagine That with the small record company Montage , which was written by the well-known country songwriters Byron Hill (wrote hits for Alabama (band) , George Strait , Gary Allan ) and J. Remington Wilde ( Conway Twitty , Randy Travis ) was written. She did not achieve the big breakthrough she had hoped for, but it was a respectable success, because she was the only German singer after Tina Rainford ( Silver Bird , 1976) to make it into the American country charts (1981, place 79, four weeks). Although the interest of the Americans quickly waned afterwards, Kern remained loyal to the country genre until the end of her life: In 1983 a double LP with the title Imagine That was released in Germany . The following year, the Dutch country magazine Gazette voted her the best European country singer. At Radio Bremen she also hosted the program Nancy's Country Drive-In and gave countless concerts.

From the late 1980s, she began to suffer increasingly from depression . On February 18, 1991, she was found hanged in her home. Her final resting place is in the New Cemetery in Rostock , where her in-laws are also buried.

In 1997 the Bear Family label released two CDs with old Kern recordings. In 1998 a documentary was published that tries to trace the life and career of Kern: And in front of me the stars… . The film, framed by recordings of various appearances and interviews with the artist, fellow musicians, supporters and colleagues from show business have their say (including Dieter Thomas Heck , his wife Ragnhild Heck and Renate Kern producer Peter Orloff ). In 2003, Butterfahrt was also released, a play in which the author Margit Rogall dared to approach Renate Kern as a person. At the end of 2008 her old record company Polydor dedicated a CD to her in the series Schlagerjuwelen: Your great successes .
