action

The bus operator Thomas Springer is delighted: He has finally received permission to offer bus tours in an idyllic small town around the lake there. With this he hopes to be able to drive the old captain Jansen and his old and constantly delayed ship “Antonia” from the lake in a short time. At the same time he could harm the pastor Himmelreich, with whom he is in constant conflict. However, he has one problem: his younger brother Michael is in love with his secretary Barbara, who is none other than the captain's eldest granddaughter.

When Himmelreich learns that Thomas is keeping a list of the daily delays of the "Antonia", he steals it during a visit to Thomas when he briefly walks out of the room to a visitor. This visitor, in turn, tells him that the mayor wants to see the pastor with him the next day to talk to him about the shipping line. Since the mayor has never seen the pastor in person, Thomas disguises himself as a kingdom of heaven and shocks the mayor with his behavior: he flirts with his wife, gets drunk and smokes cigars . Singing loudly, he finally gets into his car and is promptly stopped by a police officer, from whom he is able to flee. This is followed by a complaint from the mayor to the bishop personally, who then decides to visit Pastor Himmelreich.

Meanwhile, he has completely different problems, as he was picked up on the way home by the driver Alfred who just robbed a bank. Himmelreich succeeds in removing his weapon from Alfred and hiding the stolen money. Since Alfred can ring the church bells very well, Himmelsreich keeps him with him as a messner . Nevertheless, the cheeky tone of the actually kind-hearted Alfred first made a bad impression on the bishop, who appeared at the Kingdom of Heaven and stayed for several days. In addition, the quarrels between Himmelreich and Thomas continue, so Thomas secretly looks for his list of late arrivals in the parsonage, disguises himself as a bishop and takes Heaven's confession , whereby he learns the hiding of the papers. Later he drinks Himmelreich's favorite drink, Bitter Lemon - however, Himmelreichs is heavily mixed with hard liquor, Himmelreich is surprised at the changed taste, but wrongly attributes this to an increased quinine concentration, so that he gives the following sermon heavily alcoholic and unusually emotional. But Himmelreich also sets traps: Together with Barbara's siblings, he lets the air out of Thomas' bus tires. When Thomas announced that he wanted to organize a kind of race between the "Antonia" and his buses around the lake, Himmelreich didn't stop the Barbaras siblings from putting up various signs that should divert the buses. Thomas is not idle either and gives Captain Jansen a strong sleeping pill shortly before the race .

So it happens that Himmelreich has to drive the “Antonia” together with a sailor, while the bishop and Alfred shovel coal and later wood below deck. Due to the diversions and a tree that was felled by Barbara's siblings and Michael, which stopped the buses, the “Antonia” wins the race and, since the sailor can cope better with Himmelreich's simple directions, is punctual for the second time in her existence. Captain Jansen is allowed to sail on his ship, and Barbara and Michael, who had quarreled over a supposed affair with Michael, also get together again.

criticism

The lexicon of international film rated Reverend turned a blind eye to as "comedy after a weak script, cliched staged - the clergy are like characters of good-natured quirky cut - but still slightly above the average."

Filmecho / Filmwoche assumed that Georg Thomalla "definitely does not want to imitate his famous film predecessors Don Camillo and Father Brown". "Situation comedy, mummery and children's nose wisdom" kept each other in balance. Roy Black as a singer and the "wonderful foothills of the Alps" took care of heart and soul.
