A song for The Hague was the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976 .

format

After internal selections and jury decisions had only caused poor results in the previous years, the Hessischer Rundfunk now put responsibility in the hands of the audience. All German citizens could decide by sending in postcards.

This year, the contributions were not sung live by the performers, but played from previously recorded videos, which moderator Max Schautzer then commented on. The preliminary decision was broadcast for the first time on January 31, 1976. Postcards could then be sent in for a week before the results broadcast on February 18.

Attendees

Among the participants were the young singer Maggie Mae (applause for a totally crazy house), who had already taken part in the German preliminary decision the year before , but only achieved 7th place with Die totally verrückte Zeit , and Ireen Sheer (once water , once wine), which had already represented Luxembourg in 1974 . The native Dutch Bruce Low was already involved in the Dutch preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1958 . Piera Martell (A New Day) represented her home country, Switzerland , at the Eurovision Song Contest 1974, but only came in last.

Disqualification of the winning title

The Israeli singer Nizza Thobi had sung the winning title long before the event.

But four days after the results were broadcast, the Israeli singer Nizza Thobi revealed that she had already sung the winning song Der Star in 1973 - three years before the event - even with the permission of the composer Detlef Petersen . The song was also known to GEMA . So Tony Marshall was disqualified.

He said he knew nothing about it and refused to take part in a new preliminary decision. HR simply nominated the runner-up in the preliminary round, the Les Humphries Singers with Sing Sang Song as candidates for the Eurovision Song Contest. With 12 points, the group reached 15th place.
