The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 took place under the title Ein Lied für Den Haag .
As in the previous year, the show was hosted by the moderators Carolin Reiber , who was known for her co-moderation with Maxl Graf on the television program Funny Musicians , and the radio moderator Thomas Gottschalk , who has moderated at Bayern 3 since 1971 (Pop after eight) . A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the twelve finalists from 443 entries.
After the preliminary decision, which this year again took place about four weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest , 550 radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the twelve tracks had been run by the polling institute Infratest . During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale.
This year, contrary to the previous year, the final scores of the individual performers were announced.
