Under the title Our Song for Israel , the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 took place on February 22, 2019 , in which the artist and the song for the competition on May 18, 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ) were sought. The concept from 2018 was to be retained after Michael Schulte had achieved fourth place in the finals of the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest with the song You Let Me Walk Alone and thus the best placement since 2010.

The duo S! Sters , consisting of Laura Kästel and Carlotta Truman , prevailed over the competition during the course of the show and represented Germany at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. There they only reached the penultimate place, with the song being the only entry in the competition that did not receive any points from the audience vote.

format

In an interview with Norddeutscher Rundfunk , ARD entertainment coordinator Thomas Schreiber confirmed that the concept of Our Song for Lisbon should be continued in 2019. From May 19, 2018 to July 31, 2018, potential candidates had the opportunity to apply for the 2019 German preliminary round. Applications from solo performers and bands were accepted.

The entries submitted by July 31, 2018 were evaluated by the Eurovision jury and the international jury of experts. From the original 965 submissions, the NDR selected 198 performers who were presented to the Eurovision jury for evaluation. The jury meetings took place over three days in Cologne. 50 artists were selected there and reduced to 20 by the international jury of experts. These 20 candidates were invited to a music camp in the Maarweg studios in Cologne between September 28 and October 2, 2018. Videos are produced there and presented to the juries for evaluation. Confirmed participants of the music camp were as follows:

However, the names of some other participants were not made public. As last year, Wolfgang Dalheimer, the arranger of the Heavytones, took over the musical direction . Six to eight performers reached the next round and composed and produced a song with other songwriters for the preliminary round.

On October 22, 2018, the NDR announced that Sebastian Schub voluntarily withdrew his participation.

Like last year, the show took place in the Berlin-Adlershof studio and was sold out.

Songwriting Camp

The songwriting camp took place from November 5th to 9th, 2018 in the Berlin Kung Fu Studios and another studio in Berlin-Tempelhof . A total of 25 international songwriters took part, each writing songs with the six performers. The following songwriters took part:

  • GermanyGermany - Steven Bashir

A total of 25 songs were created during the songwriting camp, which were submitted to the juries for evaluation together with two other songs submitted and the songs of two other performers. Which song would make the preliminary decision was decided by the respective interpreter in consultation with the NDR on the basis of the assessment by the two juries. The hitherto unknown performers were artists who already had a song and a corresponding staging for their songs (complete acts). These were also presented to the juries. Finally, the Complete Act Sisters was added to the already known six participants. All seven acts will take part in the preliminary round.

Moderation

On September 3, 2018, the NDR announced that Barbara Schöneberger will be moderating the preliminary round. Schöneberger moderated the preliminary rounds in 2014 , 2015 , 2016 and 2017 . With that she returns to 2017 as a presenter. With the introduction of the six participants, Linda Zervakis was confirmed as the moderator of the preliminary round.

Voting procedure

As in 2018, there were again three groups entitled to vote in 2019, who rate the participants using the point system of the Eurovision Song Contest (12, 10, 8 to 1). This means that the top rated entry receives 12 points, the others follow with 10, 8 to 1 point. However, the points varied according to the number of participants, with the worst number of points being four points based on seven participants. Anke Giffhorn (a member of the 100-member Eurovision panel) and a male member of the International Jury, as yet unknown, will announce the result of the two juries. As in 2018, the result of the televoting will be announced by Jon Ola Sand , Executive Supervisor of the ESC.

Eurovision panel

The Eurovision panel (also: Eurovision jury) consists of 100 members selected by Simon, Kucher & Partners . On July 13, 2018, the NDR called for applications to participate in the Eurovision panel. Your rating counts for 33% of the total result.

International jury

The international jury consists of 20 members who were former members of the juries or artists who took part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Their rating also counts as 33% of the total result.

Televoting

The audience at home also has the opportunity to vote. In a given time window, viewers can vote for their favorites via televoting . The result of the audience also counts to 33% of the total result.

Attendees

On November 8, 2018, the NDR presented the six participants of Our Song for Israel .

On January 8, 2019, in addition to the titles of the songs and their composers, a duo was presented, which expanded the field to seven participants.
