The 41 Euro Vision Song Contest took place on May 18 of 1996 in the range in Norway's capital Oslo held since last year the group Secret Garden (Nocturne) could win the contest. The evening was moderated by a-ha front man Morten Harket and the journalist Ingvild Bryn .
particularities
The evening was won by the Irish Eimear Quinn and her title The Voice , followed by the representative of the host country, Elisabeth Andreassen and I evighet. With Sweden ( Den vilda from One More Time ) another Scandinavian country took third place.
Fanfavoritin was for the UK launching Australian Gina G . With her song Ooh, Aah ... Just a Little Bit, which was represented in the top 10 of the charts in various countries and even climbed twelfth on the US Billboard charts, she could only reach eighth place.
One place below her was the Cypriot singer Constantinos Christoforou , whose name was shortened to "Constantinos" in the competition. With his song Móno yia mas ('Only for us') he seemed to have done it above all to the presenter Ingvild Bryn.
Belgium and Switzerland shared 16th place . Lisa del Bo compared love with a card game in her Liefde is een kartspel . The Swedish contribution from 2001 , Listen to Your Heartbeat, is, as was officially declared in 2003 , a cover of this contribution. This year the Swedes achieved third place with Den vilda from the group One More Time with 100 points; Jan Johansen achieved exactly the same placement with exactly the same number of points last year . Switzerland was at the bottom of the table for a long time with Kathy Leander's song Mon cœur l'aime ('My heart loves him'), and only in the later voting phase did the song climb to 16th place.
The other qualified German-speaking country, Austria , sent George Nussbaumer , who had been blind since his birth, and his song Weil's dr guat got, sung in Vorarlbergian . The “blackest voice in Austria”, as Nussbaumer is often called, came in tenth place.
Winner of the night was the Irish Eimear Quinn , the Irish reminding her of traditional folk songs song The Voice as early as the ninth vote not give up the lead. It was the seventh overall victory for the Irish and the fourth in this decade. Composer and lyricist Brendan Graham was responsible for the Irish victory in 1994 .
Attendees
Since there had been a total of 30 registrations for the contest, the European Broadcasting Union abandoned the previous qualification system - the last-placed countries of the previous year are not allowed to participate in the subsequent competition - and introduced an internal qualification round in which all countries except host Norway are represented by the first Norwegian Grand Prix winner Elisabeth Andreassen and her song I evighet - in German Forever - had to qualify. Since, as in the previous year, only 23 countries were allowed to compete in the final, seven countries had to say goodbye to the 1996 Grand Prix.
Hungary , Denmark , Macedonia , Russia , Israel , Romania and Germany were hit , although Germany, Hungary and Russia only had a second chance to qualify. In the last Eurovision Song Contest, these countries only finished in the lower ranks. In contrast, Poland , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Belgium and Portugal could qualify.
In Germany in particular, people reacted with anger to the failed qualification of the Munich hairdresser Leon and his song Planet of Blue composed by Hanne Haller . In response to this, the ARD refused to broadcast the competition and postponed it to the third program of the NDR , which was also responsible for the German preliminary decision for the first time this year . It was commented by the then 30-year-old Ulf Ansorge , whose comments caused angry audience calls at NDR.

Due to criticism of the qualification system in 1993 and 1994 , a new mode was introduced: for the competition in the following year, countries with the worst 4-year average (1993 to 1996) in points are not allowed. The countries marked in red were affected.
Scoring
* The table is arranged vertically according to the order of appearance, horizontally according to the chronological scoring.
During the vote, the Spanish spokeswoman said "Holland, 6 points" even though the correct name is "The Netherlands". The moderator mistakenly understood this as “Poland, 6 points”. The 6 points were initially credited to Poland, but this was corrected after the contest was broadcast.

various
- Rumor has it that Bulgaria wanted to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Macedonia, which was participating for the first time, was eliminated from the preselection.
- The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia wanted to take part with the title Rastanak by the singer Maja Odzaklijevska. However, the country was still excluded from competition because of the war in Yugoslavia .
- It was the first competition without a contribution from Germany and also the first without a High German contribution, since Austria's contribution was sung in Vorarlbergian .
- This competition was the last in which a jury vote was used. In the years that followed, the influence of televoting grew steadily before a mix between jury and televoting was introduced in 2009 .
- The Danish contribution Kun med dig , which was eliminated in the preliminary round, was later covered by the soft rock group Michael Learns to Rock . Commercially was Paint My Love successfully especially in Asia.
