The 47th Eurovision Song Contest took place on May 25, 2002 in the Estonian capital Tallinn . The evening in the Saku Suurhall was moderated by the opera singer Annely Peebo and the actor Marko Matvere.

For the first time in the history of the competition, the evening had a motto: A Modern Fairytale / Fairytale of Music .

particularities

Artist of the winning title, Marie N , in 2004

Before the contest, entries from Germany , Sweden , France , the United Kingdom and Spain were considered favorites . At the end of the show, however, a singer from another country surprisingly held the trophy in her hand: the Latvian singer Marie N won the 47th Eurovision Song Contest with her disco song I Wanna and her lavish stage show, closely followed by the Maltese singer Ira Losco and 7th Wonder .

The German singer Corinna May competed with the song "I Can't Live Without Music" written by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Aussichter , but landed on the 21st place. Austria's Manuel Ortega and his song Say a Word narrowly escaped next year's forced break thanks to 12 points from Turkey with 18th place. However, Switzerland had to compete after the song Dans le jardin de mon âme by Francine Jordi was only third to last. Incidentally, this song contest was the only one without a German-language entry up to that point, as Germany, Austria and Belgium participated with English titles and Switzerland submitted a contribution in French to the race.

It is worth mentioning the contribution that Slovenia put into the race: After the group Sestre , three transvestites with a specially developed stewardess choreography, had won the national preliminary round, discussions across the country, even in parliament, were held as to whether such a group should represent the Country is suitable. Slovenia ended up in 13th place.

This year the Barbara Dex Award , initiated by a fan site, was presented for the sixth time. The “worst” outfit of the competition is to be awarded with this price, which should not be taken very seriously. This year's winner was Michalis Rakintzis from Greece.

Attendees

  • participating countries
  • Countries that had participated in a previous ESC, but not in 2002
  • A total of 24 countries took part. The Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Iceland and Ireland had to sit out because of their poor performance last year . Portugal voluntarily withdrew their participation, which made it possible for Latvia, which had been worse off last year, to participate. Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Macedonia, Austria, Romania and Cyprus returned after a one-year break.

The following performers returned to the competition:

country Interpreter Previous year of participation
RomaniaRomania Romania Monica Anghel 1996 (qualifying round)
Cyprus 1960Cyprus Cyprus Constantinos Christoforou (member of One ) 1996

    Voting procedure

Half of the participating countries carried out a televoting for the allocation of points. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Romania, Russia and Turkey opted for a jury vote, while Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Malta, Slovenia and Lithuania chose the mixed voting procedure (50% televoting and 50% jury). The ten best songs received 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and one point.
