This article deals with Croatia as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Participation before 1993

Even before 1993, Croatia could look back on a 30-year history of Eurovision as part of the SFR Yugoslavia . The Croatian broadcaster "TV Zagreb" made the most contributions, 10 out of a total of 26:

In addition, two Croatian interpreters competed in the Eurovision Song Contest for Yugoslavia, but were not contributions from TV Zagreb:

  • 1965 - Two years after his first contribution, Vice Vukov competed with Čežnja in Naples and only managed 12th place. (Officially a contribution from TV Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina))
  • 1983 - Daniel gota good 4th placewith Džuli in Munich . (Officially a contribution from TV Titograd (Montenegro))

Regularity of participation and achievements

Croatia took part in the competition for the first time in 1993 and since then every year up to and including 2013 as an independent country. In 2014 and 2015 they did not take part due to financial reasons and lack of interest. After returning in 2016, they are now participating regularly again.

The country celebrated its greatest successes in 1996 and 1999, when Maja Blagdan and Doris Dragović each achieved fourth place. Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, you could qualify continuously from 2004 to 2006 inclusive, in 2007 you were eliminated in the semi-finals. In 2008 and 2009 they reached the final again, but both contributions ended up in the final in the lower half of the table. From 2010 to 2013, the country consistently failed to qualify for the final. When they returned in 2016, Croatia qualified for the final for the first time since 2009; in the final, however, they only finished 23rd. In 2017, Croatia (as the only country in the former Yugoslavia) qualified again for the final and reached 13th place, the highest ranking in eleven years. In 2018 and 2019, however, they failed again to qualify for the final.

National preliminary decisions

All Croatian contributions up to 2011 were chosen during the Dora music festival . The event first took place in 1992 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. In 2002 the preliminary round was extended and supplemented by two semi-finals. Since 2012, however, HRT has only selected internally, so the music festival has not taken place since then. Even after returning in 2016, all contributions were selected internally. For 2019 they returned to the Dora Music Festival.

languages

In the preliminary round, mostly all contributions had to be sung in Croatian, which is also the original language of all songs. Internationally, however, some contributions were also presented in English, for the first time in 2002 and also in 2004. In 2001, Strings of My Heart was presented in English and Croatian in the preliminary round, but in Copenhagen in English. In 2003 the last chorus was sung in English. The contributions in 1993 and 2007 were planned to be bilingual from the outset, with the former including a noticeably high proportion of English, despite the language regulations. The contributions from 2005, 2006 and 2007 are the only ones that did not include a completely English version; a German version was also sung in by Nostalgija 1995 a few years later.
