The 21st Dora Festival took place on February 16, 2019 and was the Croatian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). The winner of the competition is the singer Roko Blažević , he will represent Croatia in Tel Aviv in May with the song The Dream .

format

concept

On October 30, 2018, the public broadcasting company Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT) confirmed that the Dora Festival will take place again for the first time since 2011. It is planned that the competition will last over three days, with the actual preliminary decision for the ESC only taking place on the third day. The plan for the three broadcasts is as follows:

  • 1st evening: Chansons and Opatija Serenades with the symphony orchestra
  • 2nd evening: Dora classic
  • 3rd evening: preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019

In the preliminary decision for the ESC 2019, a total of 16 participants with one title each should compete against each other. The winner should be decided 50% by jury voting and 50% by televoting. Uršula Tolj, who in the past often awarded Croatian points at the ESC, will produce the show.

venue

On December 4, 2018, HRT confirmed at a press conference that the broadcast would take place in Opatija , as it has often done in the past . The Marino Cvetkovic Sports Hall will serve as the venue for the first time.

Choice of contribution

For Dora 2019 it was allowed for the first time that foreign composers could also submit songs. The interpreter of the song had to be a Croatian citizen. Only whole songs were allowed to be submitted. Demo versions were not taken into account in the selection. The rules for languages at the festival have also been relaxed. In addition to Croatian and English, the accepted languages were now French and Italian .

From November 20, 2018 to January 10, 2019, contributions could be submitted to HRT. However, these must not have been published beforehand.

On January 11, 2019, HRT announced that they had received around 150 songs. A jury consisting of members from HGU, HDS and HRT, music critics, singers with Eurovision experience, composers and songwriters then selected the 16 participants.

Attendees

On January 17, 2019, HRT presented the 16 participants to the public. Among them are some returnees who have already represented Croatia at the Song Contest in the past. Neda Parmać , part of the Gelato Sisters group, represented Croatia as early as 2010 and also Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005 as a member of the Feminnem group . Marko Škugor , part of the 4 tenors group, represented Croatia in 2013 as part of the Klapa s mora group . Tonči Huljić, who represented Croatia in 1995 as part of the Magazin group , is returning as a composer. Likewise Jacques Houdek , who represented the country back in 2017 . On January 29, Group 4 Tenora announced that they were retiring from Dora 2019. Instead, Kim Verson was named as the group's successor.

final

The final took place on February 16. 1–8, 10 and 12 points were awarded to the individual contributions according to the results of televoting and jury voting.
