Manntra is a rock band from Umag , Croatia, founded in 2011 .

Band history

After the industrial metal band Omega Lithium split up, Marko Matijević Sekul and Zoltan Lečei founded the band in 2011. With Andrea Kert and Marko Purišić, a drummer and a guitarist joined singer Matijević Sekul and bassist Lečei. After several line-up changes, the band now consists of singer Matijević Sekul, drummer Kert, the two guitarists Purišić and Boris Kolarić - who also plays the bagpipes and mandolin within the band - and Maja Kolarić on bass .

In November 2012, the group's debut album, Horizont , was released, which was recorded in Croatia and Slovenia by singer Matijević Sekul on his own. Three years later the musicians produced and released their second album Venera . The band's third album, Meridian, followed in 2017 . With Micha Rhein from In Extremo a well-known guest musician could be won after he became aware of the band. As a result, Manntra also played at the In Extremo Festival for the 20th anniversary and as the opening act for their Quid Pro Quo tour.

Manntra has already played at several major music festivals, including the Metaldays , the Wacken Open Air and the Rockharz Open Air . The group took part on February 16, 2019 with their song In the Shadows in Dora , the Croatian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv .

style

Manntra's music is described as a mix of folk rock and folk metal with Croatian song lyrics. Singer Marko Matijević Sekul mentioned the musicians' love for medieval folk music in Croatia when he decided to play this kind of music. He also mentioned the motifs of folk, as well as the romantic and the warlike-angry side of folk music, which in his opinion work perfectly with rock guitars.

Sekul named medieval Croatian folk music and its instruments as the most important musical inspirations. Modern bands that have an influence on the musicians include Laibach , Rammstein , Marilyn Manson , In Extremo , Nine Inch Nails and Pendulum .

The singing of Matijević Sekul is described as markedly bass-heavy and compared to Tomi Meglić from Siddharta . The tracks on the third album Meridian are about the sea, but also about a fire disaster that struck the Kornati archipelago in 2007 and killed twelve firefighters. In addition to the song lyrics in Croatian, the use of accordion and mandolin , the influence of Croatian folk music and the traditional Dalmatian klapa singing are mentioned as a musical specialty .

The guitar riffs are described as terrific, the rhythm invites you to clap and pound along and the melodies have catchy tunes . By using their national language, the band stands out from many other genre representatives.
