This article looks at the history of Andorra as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .
Regularity of participation and successes in competition
Andorra first took part in the competition in 2004. However, the debut was not very successful. The song Jugarem a estimar-nos only landed 18th out of 22 contributions in the semi-finals. In 2005, the country only came third from last. In 2006, Jenny came last in the semi-finals, which is the worst placement in the country. In 2007 Andorra only narrowly failed to qualify for the final with 12th place for the first time, which is still the best placement in the country to this day. With 15th and 16th place, the country only reached the bottom of the semi-finals in 2008 and 2009. With the exception of 2007, Andorra was always in the top five. In 2010 the country withdrew from the competition for financial reasons. At the end of 2011, the Andorran broadcaster Ràdio i Televisió d'Andorra (RTVA) also announced that it wanted to leave the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which would mean that the country would have lost its eligibility to participate. However, this plan was not pursued after a meeting in 2012 between EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre and Andorran Prime Minister Antoni Martí Petit . RTVA therefore remains a member of the EBU and is therefore fundamentally able to participate. On May 19, 2018, RTVA announced that it would continue to rule out a return in the future. The reason for not taking part is still the high cost.
Overall, Andorra has never reached the final, which makes them the only country in the competition that has never participated in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. With a last place and otherwise only worse placements, Andorra is one of the most unsuccessful countries in the competition.

National preliminary decisions
The first Andorran contribution was selected from a total of 12 songs in a nine-round preliminary decision called 12 punts in 2004: In the first six weeks, the singers Bis a Bis and Marta Roure, who had previously been selected internally, each presented a title, each of which was the best qualified for the semi-finals. In the two semifinals, three of the six titles were presented, one by Marta Roure and one by Bis a Bis and the third of the two together; the best title made it to the final, in which the two songs were sung by both. Marta Roure was chosen as the winner in a separate vote. In 2005 the interpreter was determined internally by a jury and then her song was selected from three proposals in a public preliminary decision called Desitja'm Sort . In 2006 the interpreter and the song were selected internally and presented in the program Alguna cosa batega , also in 2007. In 2008, the television station decided on an internal qualification, the singer and the song title were announced in December 2007, and an excerpt of the song was published in Internet published.
After the persistently poor results, RTVA decided to make a preliminary decision again in 2009. It was entitled Passaport a Moscou . Three titles competed against each other, and a mixture of jury and televoting determined the winner.
languages
The first three contributions from Andorra were presented entirely in Catalan . This language has never been used on the song contest stage before, although the Spanish contribution was originally intended to be sung in Catalan in 1968, which was not allowed under Francisco Franco's regime. In 2007 the singing was mixed in English and Catalan. In 2008, the contribution Casanova was sung almost exclusively in English for the first time , only six words were in Catalan. In 2009 Susanne Georgi sang the stanzas of La teva decisió in Catalan, the refrain was in English. In the original version of the song this was different, the stanzas were Catalan, only the last lines of the chorus were English.

- The coordination ratio between Andorra and its neighboring country Spain is exceptional. In 2004 and 2006, Andorra only received points from Spain (twelve and eight respectively). In return, Andorra gave Spain its highest rating every year with the exception of 2007 in the final. In 2007 an expert jury determined the result instead of televoting , and Spain received no points. On average, Andorra both awarded and received the most points to Spain (10 and 10.8)
