Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest
This article deals with the history of Lithuania as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .
Regularity of participation
Lithuania took part in the competition for the first time in 1994, but had to sit out the following year because of the last place. From 1996 to 1998 they withdrew until the ESC 1999. Since then, the country has been taking part regularly, even though it had to be suspended in 2000 and 2003 due to poor placements in the previous year. Only in 2010 did the country want to withdraw due to financial bottlenecks, but ultimately took part.
Success in competition
In their 1994 debut, Lithuania did not score a point, coming in last. It is the only country besides Portugal that did not receive a single point on its debut. In 1999 there was a 20th place out of 23 participants at the comeback. Because of this, one was not allowed to participate in 2000. In 2001 they reached a 13th place, a year later they only reached a penultimate place. That is why in 2003 one was again not allowed to participate. In 2004 and 2005 you could not qualify for the final and in 2005 came last in the semi-finals. In 2006 they qualified for the final and achieved the best result so far with sixth place. In 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 there were again lower places in the table in the final. In 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2017 you could not qualify for the final. Donny Montell was able to get 14th place in 2012 and four years later, in 2016, Lithuania's second best result with 9th place. He also achieved Lithuania's highest score in 2016 with 200 points. In 2017 they were the penultimate in the semi-finals and missed the final. In 2018 they reached the final and took 12th place. In 2019 there was not enough for a final - Jurij Veklenko missed the final behind Denmark with one point missing.
A total of 4 of 13 final entries ended up in the front half of the table. Seven times they were eliminated in the semifinals. Lithuania is the only Baltic country so far that has never won the competition, while Estonia and Latvia have each won the ESC once (2001 and 2002).

National preliminary decisions
Only in 1994 was the Lithuanian contribution selected internally, in the other years national preliminary decisions took place. In 1999, 2001 and 2002 these took place on an evening with 12 or 15 participants, each of whom presented a title. The winner was determined in 1999 by a jury alone (although a telephone vote took place at the same time, but this had no influence), in 2001 and 2002 by a mixture of jury and telephone votes. In 2002, the winning title We All of the B'Avarija group was disqualified after the preliminary round.
From 2004, the preliminary decisions were made much more complicated by previously held semi-finals with a relatively large number of participants, especially in the years 2006 and 2007, than before the semi-finals in each quarter-final rounds were held in which the singers in the groups known singers , less well-known singers and newcomers were divided . In 2004, the jury and public vote continued to vote, from 2005 only by telephone.
Since 2010, the preliminary round of Eurovizijos (from 2010 to 2012 Eurovizija ) consists of several preliminary rounds and the final, which have lasted for several months since 2013, from October to December in 2013 and from December to March in 2014. A marathon preliminary round was held in 2015 as well, but this time a duet of two of the three finalists won the final. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 the preliminary decision took place from January to March. In 2017, however, unlike in previous years, the final did not take place in the LRT studio, but in the Švyturio Arena in Klaipėda . In 2018 the final took place in an arena, namely the Žalgirio Arena . In 2019, the preliminary decision took place over two months, January and February.
languages
The first Lithuanian contribution was made in 1994 in accordance with the rules in the national language. In 1999 Strazda's contribution was performed in the rather unknown dialect Schemeitic , all later contributions were mostly sung in English, only the rap part of the 2001 song You Got Style contained additional lines in Lithuanian, French and German. In addition, the 2009 contribution from Love was performed in Russian from the last chorus onwards and the 2011 song, C'est ma vie , was partly performed in French. Of Love or Leave from the year 2007 also a Lithuanian version was recorded. Lithuania has been singing in English again since 2012, although the 2018 article also contains a few lines in Lithuanian.

various
- Lithuania's 17 points in the 2005 semifinals were, up to that point in time, the highest number of points for a last-placed entry at a Eurovision event since the point system was introduced in 1975, which is still in force today. Finland and Switzerland surpassed this in the final in 2009 and 2011, while Poland achieved more points last placed in the first semi-final in 2011, as did Slovakia in the second semi-final in 2012. In 2018 Portugal broke the record with 39 points.
- In 1999 the Lithuanian delegation showed up for rehearsals in Jerusalem one day late , supposedly to save the cost of an overnight stay.
- In 2007 the band 4Fun created the illusion of a shadow theater. Due to the extensive renovation work, the Lithuanian delegation asked to take another break from moderation before the presentation, but this was refused.
- In 2016, the Lithuanian ESC representative Donatas Montvydas was incorrectly presented as a representative of Latvia in the official publication of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Sweden .
- In 2019 Jurij Veklenko missed the final in eleventh place with just one point behind Denmark
